If Toyota added heated mirrors to the Tacoma, there would be nothing to worry about...

You can add them yourself for a lot cheaper than they would charge you.

There is a consensus here among some that 2015 is probably the year for a redesign or facelift to the Taco by coincidence. These things are planned out well in advance and should not be perceived as a 'reaction' to a new Colorado.

The Taco has relatively underwhelming gas mileage relative to full size trucks and the 5 speed auto is outdated. They probably had plans to step up to direct injection and a higher gear count tranny anyway but this will likely force that issue. At least I would hope so.

GM has had a mid-size truck going way back to the HiLux era. I think they even had crew cabs in the late S10 era possibly. I would agree that this latest entry on their part is clearly aimed at the Tacoma. But that's not really saying much as the Tacoma pretty much IS the market for mid-sized trucks these days.

No I'm not going to buy one.

I just sold my '88 HiLux after 25 years of service and bought a new '14 Taco. I'm good (though in some ways my '14 is not hardly as robust as the old unit). Chevy had their shot but they had obviously 'abandoned' the old Colorado/Canyon years before they suspended US production. And even the spy photos of the new Colorado were ghastly giving me zero incentive to wait a while longer.

I like the looks a lot of the new Colorado (not the earlier spy photos). A lot in fact. The direct injection and 6 speed are exactly what is needed in a midsize. They clearly have done their homework and market research, know where they want to be and are going after it. While I doubt the Tacoma's sales will be dramatically impacted, having a serious option to what has become a one model (Tacoma) segment in the market will likely expand the segment. It could take sales away from full size trucks, SUVs and may affect growth of Tacoma sales to some degree (hard to ever know).

I see nothing but good in that. Competition will help improve the Tacoma's offerings, features, prices, etc. for all potential consumers. Frankly I think Toyota is more than a bit guilty of 'resting on their reputation' for quite some time now and are ripe for some legit competition.

For those who are close minded to even considering other makes of mid-size truck - it's going to be good for them and their future Tacoma purchases. For those more open minded they could very well have an actual choice where there is very little today (depending on your opinion of the Frontier).

GM has a serious advantage in their distribution system to include option packaging, etc. compared to Toyota's if you happen to have the unfortunate luck of residing in the Southeast or Gulf States regions. That's something else Toyota can and should (and probably won't) fix.

    My $0.02 :D

Don't know but apparently their countermove via Ford was to make the new Tundra look just like a Ford. Hope that's not what's coming down the road for the Tacoma.

Honestly guys, I like my Tacoma but... it's no cheaper than a full size, it gets the same gas mileage as a full size, and the reliability is starting to slip. When mine craps out (hopefully in many years) I will be checking out the Colorado. Competition is good.

I'd wait a few years and if everything looks decent, it's worth thinking about.

I traded in my Chevy z71 Tahoe for my first tacoma, and I haven't looked back since. Toyota is gonna ha e to something really stupid to lose my business.

Bunch of fan boys. I love my tacoma as much as the next guy but the Gm products I've own 1992 silverado,2006 silverado and 2002 suburban have been nothing but good with me. The 1992 silverado my dad sold it after 400,000+ and still ran good. 2006 silverado running strong after 160,000 and the suburban after 180,000. Of coarse properly maintain.

I would love to see a diesel Tacoma. I wouldn't buy one right away until they worked out all the bugs. It would certainly be on my buy list when I finally run this one into the ground. May be old and gray by then though.

That truck looks very nice... That along with the extra HP and better fuel economy might sway a lot of first time mid size truck buyers. While everyone here might say "the tacoma is what I'm sticking with" many of the buyers in 2015 might not be truck enthusiasts like the members of this forum. I'm sure Toyota has planned for this already and is poised for a "response". Otherwise they might lose a lot of the market share they have fought to capture in the past years. Albeit only for a few years until these GM trucks turn out to have issues like everyone here is predicting.

A comparably equipped (SR5 like) full size carries an MSRP 4 to 6k higher. Full size w v6 get about 4 to 5 mpg better than taco.

I love how people are saying the Tacoma reliability has dropped off. When was the last time you heard of someone being broken down, truck not starting, etc? Yes, we do have some issues that seem to stay with every model year. Some of these people need to go buy a GM or Ford and then they will have a totally different outlook on the so called reliability and problem issues.

Why are people trying to compare a truck who's core design that's from 2005 to a newer truck who's design is from 2015? Yeah the Tacoma has seen a couple facelifts since then, but that's all they are. We'll have to wait and see what the next gen Tacoma brings.

But the full size gets 4-6K in incentives, and we all know the Tacoma gets zero incentives. So actual transaction prices are probably very similar for a Tacoma Double Cab and the Full Size Extended Cabs (similar interior space).

Sweers (Lead Toyota truck engineer) basically said there won't be a diesel. Said they won't comply with CAFE standards down the road so I don't see them doing it.
