I use a millermatic 140 works great for me...I welded many things with it. Lent it to my friend he welded the frame of his jeep with it. So I guess you can say its a good all around welder...you can find them on Craig'slist cheap just make sure you use gas unless you are just migging sheet metal .

I have a millermatic 140 too and they are great little machines. For sheet metal you should use .025 wire with C25 (25% CO2/75% Argon) gas. Right now I just run what came with my machine, .030 wire and tank of co2 (got tank and co2 for free).

I used flux core when I first got it, then I bought the gas and wire for it. I literally thought I was just a bad welder before I got this machine. Now if the weld comes out bad, I know it's just me:rolleyes:

Hahaha well that's an awesome deal. Some people get discouraged from using flux core for that reason, and all they have to do is read a manual Lol

Yup, I know he bought it from some crack head for 100 bucks, then thought it was broke. Simple fix, I also was given my Mac tools plasma cutter for free...it just needed to be hooked up properly. I love people that do not trouble shoot things.:)

Do you have the magneto out of the machine? I might be able to help if they are the same type deal as the ones in airplanes I've helped work on

well, I bought a new condenser and points for the old thing, if that doesn't work I am clueless! I don't know of any way to trouble shoot them. works or doesn't as far as I know. . . .

im so excited to run some 7018 off it you don't even know! I run a trailblazer 302 at work and it gives a little bit to play with as far as arc characteristics, but the 200 is going to give me tons of room to really dial it in.

I just know that after I get the motor running, the gen is going to be another few days of cleaning/ figuring things out.

towing it out has so-far been the best part. high-lifts, ropes, shackles, straps, and 4wd is always a good time:cool:

I have no shame in posting this and I'm asking for someone to help me. I can't get my dad's machine settings right and I can't look at the weld and think "Oh well let me just turn this up/down". I'm trying to teach myself. I can lay decent beads on a machine that is setup but I can't figure this one out. I'm using a Lincoln SP 130T with gas (not sure what mix since it's my dad's). This is 1/4" flat stock, .023 solid core, heat all the way up on E, wire speed 7. The polarity is right (electropositive for gas). Going to try switching to .030 flux core tomorrow.

I've been watching youtube troubleshooting vids but nobody is getting results like this.

Also, I keep getting a lot of buildup in and on the tip of the gun. Would this mean too much wire?

Based on what little I know, .023 is way too small, go .035 wire. Weld looks cold turn up the voltage. Clean the work surface really well, especially with solid wire and if you have a propane torch try preheating

Well the voltage is all the way up and the 1/4" was the only scrap I had. My bumper is 2x3 1/8" wall so I figured .023 would be fine. I know that size is generally for body work though. How would the .030 flux be? I ask because those are the only two rolls of wire my dad has haha.
