    Hey all,
I am looking to add a trailer brake light plug to my truck to pull a small trailer hauling maybe 1000 pounds max. i don't know much about the world of trailers and wiring, but would a plug and play kit like this work well?

    http://www.autoanything.com/towing/75A3875A0A0.aspx

Also, what is the weight rating for the bumper hitch for these trucks? (2001, 4x4, auto, 2.7) as i remember it's 350 pounds tongue weight, 3500 trailer?

    thanks!

Correct, 3500 lbs. The class 3 hitch is rated for 5k lbs. If you plan on towing with the ball bolted to the bumper...I wouldn't do that. Make sure you use a hitch. The bumpers are week and thin and will buckle.

The plug and play trailer wiring works great and it's easy to install. You can also buy it from etrailer.com which is where I bought mine. I tow a pop-up camper weighing around 1000 lbs.

Not just any trailer wiring kit will work. Toyota combined turn and brake into the same circut. Etrailer has the right part for tacos.

I am running one without brake and got it from oreiley for 40 bones

    thanks for the help!
i don't know about the turn and brake lights on the same circuit... there are two seperate bulbs in the taillight assembly. either way, i guess what is offered on etrailer for my truck should fit fine. i just wasn't sure if one brand was better than the other.

didn't know about the weak bumper hitches... i'll take a look at mine and add a receiver eventually. i don't think i'll be pulling enough weight to crumple the hitch.

I ordered the one from Etrailer (118379). Installed pretty easily (no cutting or splicing). Supposed to adapt from Toyota's configuration, to the typical trailer. I haven't towed anything yet, though.

The towing capacity on my truck is stamped on a black plastic strip on the bumper. The max tongue weight is 350, and max towing weight is 3500.

Both sites show the adapter with the converters. You will need one of these style because of the truck having separate turn, brake light bulbs and trailers having the turn and brake lights on the same filament of one bulb. I wouldn't tow with the bumper because of the strength issue and that with a receiver hitch you can get the trailer to set level when towing.

I have been using one of those plug and play kits for years and it works fine.

The most I would tow with my bumper hitch is a utility trailer on my own land, and I would even hesitate in doing that. Mainly because my original bumper rusted from the inside out - it looked like new from the outside, but was thin as paper in a few spots and the bumper brackets weren't that much better. If you are going to be on a public road, be safe and just install a ClassIII hitch
