You did not need to. All you had to do was to switch to 4hi and press traction button once to go to ALSD (TRAC mode) on all 4 wheels.
4low uses ATRAC and its for rock crawling not mud or snow. I guess toyota neeeds to make a turn knob thingy with pictures :D like Land Rover has

The electronic LSD on these trucks suck ass. I use it all the time and all it does is upset me at how little it does.mThe locker is much better in its capabilities. No question. I used the LSD on dry pavement and on the ice and its nearly pointless.

I dont disagree that system is not the best thing on the planet, but still you need to have wheel spin to go through mud. so 4L is never good choice. Also if you dont press the button engine will keep slowing you down. Turn knob LR has its easier but makes it for the smaller number of choices.
If you went with 4hi and pressed button you would have went through the mud no problems.
You went with equivalent of crawl mode into the mud. That will never work.

I would expect nothing less from a vehicle that cost 3-4x a Tacoma.

The problem this time was all for of my tires basically got lifted off the ground. No mode or front or rear or any locker was going to help. My transmission crossmember was hung up. that's what stopped me dead. We looked after and that crossmember cut me down several inches from the ground clearance the rover had. It's was enough that we could see the difference with them sitting next to each other. And it made the difference in the mud pit. I got stuck so fast I wasn't fully in it. My friend was still on solid ground and just walked up to the rear hitch and hooked the winch to it. The rover made it past that spot right away.
