Yeah, but all v6 engines were pathetic in that era.

    Heh.

I had a couple of them when the Corolla and Tercel were the same damn car (78 and 80 in my case).

The '80 with the I4 5-speed manual was hella fun to drive. Got 33ish MPG driven by a dipshit 16 year old and reliable as all hell.

I still miss that car after I totalled it.

That's just the natural progression of the automobile. What people now think should be included standard all started off a luxury. I haven't seen a car in the last few years without a/c, ps, pb, radio, clock, and when I was young you had a high class car if you had that. In the next few years it will be the heated seats, dual zone a/c, automatic wipers, headlights that are expected on every car. I know what you mean on the Beetles my 1st one didn't have a gas gauge, it was optional, you had a lever for reserve on the floor when you ran out.

I guess I should clarified earlier...did Toyota make a car that all the major publications say "stay away from!" It seems most of the replies are just opinions of ugliness. I had a lot of friends who had Tercels as first cars and they beat the crap out of them and like a lot of Toyota's they kept running.

Surprised no one brought up the Paseo or Yaris

Any supra with the 7MGE/7MGTE or pickup with the 3.0V6 are vehicles to be avoided unless you like swapping head gaskets.

To be fair the 7M can be fixed with a quality head gasket and proper torque on the head studs. Not sure about the 3.0.

Tercel's were tanks. Just like Corolla's from the same age, you couldn't kill those if you tried. Again, lack of luxury doesn't equate to shitty. Same for Yaris's and Echo's. Basic beater boxes.

I'd agree with the statement of anything with the 3.0.

Echos and Tercels may be ugly and low-budget, but they are also really reliable. I still see them almost daily out on the roads with current safety and emissions tags. I used to have an '89 Tercel 5 speed that was really fun to drive and got killer mpg. It could make a U-turn inside of a single lane. I got rear-ended by a Ford F150 4x4 at a stop light and it smashed the trunk and rear axle all the way into the rear passenger area. It also slammed me into the truck that was in front of me. When the chaos stopped, I was unhurt, none of the window glass broke and the engine was still quietly idling. I miss that little low-budget "Turdcel." The T100's were also reliable but they were too far ahead of their time and a little too big for the engines Toyota made at the time. For some weird reason I love the T100's plain as a cardboard box styling.

They made a sharp nosed van back in the eighties. Real ugly, friends had one rode like shit. Front wheel drive, wait, no, maybe it was rear wheel drive. It was that bad.

My sister had a later Tercel - it had some sort of CV carb design that went south and started dumping fuel down the intake. It was out of warranty and a new carb was over $1k (in 1995 money), so she traded it for a Civic.

Come to think of it, here's the sound system on the new Datsun Go being introduced in "emerging markets":
