Big deal on this..not worth having to rip it down and do it over.

I pulled a permit for my pool, building and electrical. My brother in law who lives in a different town didn't, but:

His pool is not visible from the street even if you are walking by the house..mine is.

I'd already dealt with the inspector on the pool when I moved in and he wasn't happy, don't want a repeat of that. Especially good since I came to learn he has a major hard-on for pools, and by his own words is stricter than the state requirements.

I ran my electric right into my breaker box, buried the wire, etc. My brother in law is just using an extension cord. It gets the job done but if it's ever found, that's a big no-no.

Above all, I want to enjoy the damn thing. Not worth the money to have to pull it down and start over, plus I'm sure he'd be even worse if that happened.

Do I want to know what he's like on decks? The PO of my house rushed up a deck prior to sale. It's okay appearing from a distance although the rails aren't up to code, but they didn't use actual decking, so I'm sure it's going to need to come out sooner versus later. I'll have to pull up the codes when I design the new deck in AutoCAD.

I get it, I still just don't necessarily agree with it. I think they have a right to protect their utilities but within the house, if the home owner is dumb enough to do something and it results in them burning down their house, I don't understand why we need to protect them from themselves. I see it as a nanny state, we can't regulate stupidity.

I believe it was an elevator issue we were arguing actually

Not sure on that..we built a small deck on the back after moving in, plus had one put on the pool last year and didn't do a permit for either.

I can honestly say the building inspector was decent, when I walked in for the pool permit he had a packet already made up..sat down and went over it all with me making sure I knew what I had to do.

I understand how you feel, but at the same time, I'd be very upset if my house burned down because the neighbor Mickey Moused the wiring in his house that sits closely to mine.

Yeah, I hear ya. I don't know what the answer is for that. The thing is, it still depends on the honor system to let the inspector know you're doing work so why not make it more of an informational thing so people might be more inclined to call and ask rather than an enforecement thing where people try to keep the inspectors out?

Because if everyone had such honor, you'd ideally not need the inspector to play watchdog. Everyone would either research and know what they were doing or have the common sense to say "I don't".

Truth. But you would think an inspector would take 5 minutes to talk to whoever is doing the work. That's about as much time as they'll need to figure out if the job is going to be Mickey-Moused (and he needs to be a dickhead) or the owner knows the rules/codes and can get the job done right (doesn't need to be a dickhead). I would chalk it up as professional courtesy as a public servant.

I'd agree with that. I know my dealings with the electrical inspector in my town weren't good, and it could have been so easily avoided. First time out when everything is uncovered, give a punch list of what needs doing. I'll get my guy to get it all done and have you back. Seems easy enough and less time wasted.

    Whats a building inspector? :notsure:

Are you moving any plumbing/electrical? Any framing? If i remeber you are just replacing the tub/floors/sheetrock and i assume other fixtures. You might be fine. I would play dumb, call town hall and ask if you need a permit, just dont give them any info. Or just finish the bathroom, and put a hole in the wall in another room. When the inspector shows up show him the hole :stirthepot:

No, I'm talking about the air force kid, 2nd or third down. Dude with 46 votes is crushing it, which is funny because his truck looks pretty much finished.

His truck is sick, probably why he is getting so many votes. I would like to think most people who have been around the forum for awhile would either vote for someone who contributes to TW like craig or a few other guys that answer questions and share their knowledge, or someone who deserves it for other reasons. I have a feeling its mostly newer members who just pick which truck they like and dont even read the stories.

At this point in the game--I agree with Evan. If you think you can finish the bath project quickly-do it. Then if you have a place say in the basement or closet with sheetrock- cut out roughly the same size sheetrock as what the inspector seen. Most towns will let you renovate without a permit as long as 1) you are doing your own work and you are the owner of the home with no rental space/apts 2)you are not changing/ adding electrical wiring/circuits 3) you are not changing drain/vent pipes 4) you are not changing any of the studs/beams. But if while renovating you notice anything out of current code, say a non GFCI or GFCI protected outlet closer than 6ft?? from the toilet, sink or tub --you are required to pull a permit to fix the problem. But as you found out- some inspectors are real Dik's. LMAO- but really not funny-- i found a closet light once wired with telephone wire!!

Take pictures of everything now that is opened up just incase, and if you can think of a way to show that you kept all the existinf plumbing/electrical that would be good.
