Best way to increase MPG for under $200

I was just curious what is the best way to increase fuel mileage for under $200. Is it from a specific air filter and if so what brand? If something else I am curious to know. I am new to the site and just curious of any cheap ways to increase mileage without decreasing horsepower.

I would have to agree it will be your driving habit. That right foot. Best performance product you own. My chevelle normally makes 7 and 8 mpg. But if I baby her she is capable of 11mpg. In my trucks case I try to make it easier on the truck to get and dispose of air as in removing the secondary air filter and getting a new air filter. Then an aftermarket muffler maybe headers. I don't have any advice on which ones to purchase as I haven't bought an air filter or modified the exhause yet.

 

For $2.50. Cut a 2x4 block and put it below your gas pedal

 

Drive at 60-65MPH and under 2k. In town avoid lights ,stop signs , and traffic jams LOL!!!! Keep your tires at 32-33 PSI cold in the morning before you move the car tire pressure, and change the Air(AFE Pro Dry S and oil filters and oil, any)Keep the $150 for gas...............Rich

 

1) Remove the secondary filter.
2) Add an aFe Dry Pro S drop in filter.
3) Get a scangauge to help you train yourself to drive efficiently.


You should have enough change left from the $200 for a couple beers.

 

Save the $200 and put it towards gas

 

Like others have said, SG and AFE air filter. SG lets me monitor realtime MPG, and according to that I've picked up a few instanteous mpg from the AFE I swapped in last week! (Not to mention it's ~$40 for a reusable dry filter instead of $20 each time for a new OEM filter and doesn't need oil to clean.)

I've noticed it gets up to the 20+mpg range while cruising sooner with the new AFE, but the tank average hasn't gone up much.

So far it looks like I've only picked up 1mpg for the tank average with the AFE, but it'll save money by not buying air filters again. I've tried other things like throttle body spacer, but no improvement. Bed covers claim to improve mpg, but I saw no change when I had one before my cap. So I'm inclined to believe the only REAL way to improve is through the right foot/skinny pedal relationship!

 

Quit eating junk food, and exercise to lose 25 lbs

Remove your back seat, headliner, visors, side view mirrors, and paint

Remove the the doors and fuel cap cover

Remove the truck bed

Sell these things on ebay, except for the removed paint, not much of a market for that.

I'm with the others though. Scangauge can help if you use it properly. I was surprised at what changed 5mph did for my mileage. Keep it under 70 now and try not to do hard starts. Also when cruising down the freeway in traffic I do more "coasting" which dramatially improves mileage.

 

Only $198 at Walmart, and will help with some of the above suggestions.

I got two for free! One a friend's nephew left chained to his house when he broke in. Uncle told me to call the cops if I saw him show up. So I made the call when I saw him pull out a credit card and pick the lock. Well, he was arrested and after a couple months I asked my friend what he wanted to do with his nephew's bike (still chained out front). He told me to make it disappear. So I stopped by after work one night with a pair of bolt cutters.

My other bike had parts mooched off it to fix other ones at Sam's Club in Myrtle beach and was tossed by the trash compactor. My manager said I could just have it so I bought a new quick release axle kit for around $6, tightened some spokes to straighten out the wheels, made some other adjustments, and still ride it 5 years later.

 

Good article. But some of these guys are extreme. I do a little of it; such as putting truck in neutral on hills. Running 50+mph on a hill & taking foot off accelerator your rpm's are still reving at 1500-2000. Put it in neutral and the rpm drops to idle speed. Even on some flats, that I will have to stop or slow down to make a turn. Put in neutral way ahead and coast. I am getting much better gas mileage. I'm still in the testing phase. Around town driving I was getting 18 before. So far I have gotten 20.5 mpg (but I haven't been hypermiling at every moment I could. It is a habit that you would have to get into. I keep forgetting about it).

Be careful with that hypermiling stuff- Many of those practices are illegal (like "coasting" on the road) and if you happen to have something go wrong (like failure to re-engage the trans) and you get into an accident it can make it worse for you.

Nice easy starts, no speed racer runs, highways @ 65-70max and keep it in the lower end of the rav band. The ScanGuage is a solid tool to figure out how to coax those extra miles outta the truck.

 

I like this kind of suggestion. My only beef with it is WalMart bikes really do suck. A lot of bike shops won't even work on them because repairs so often exceed the value of the bike (and the parts are often non-standard and not compatible with available parts). My around-town bike is a vintage JC Higgins Cruiser. It's a single speed with a coaster brake. Very little to go wrong and I bought it for $40 when I was in college in '91. I still ride it daily and I'd say I've gotten good value out of it so far.

Anyway, for around town the simpler the better, I'd say. It also makes them less appealing to thieves.

 

For the most part the illegal stuff is turning your engine off while coasting. This I do not do. With the engine off (this would be dangerous) , your speedometer doesn't work,steering is affected,brakes are affected.

 

I wasn't accusing- nor am I an expert on the laws related to it.
Just wanted people to take pause for a moment and make sure they are researching the driving techniques they are using!!
