Let me let you in on a little secret, if it has a label and you purchased this at a place of business, it ain't real shine. The real thing usually comes through a friend or a friend of a friend. Cash on delivery, on a dirt road, face to face. At least that's how it's done down here in the good ol' "Heart of Dixie". Roll Tide and Merry Christmas y'all.

I have to agree. Around here in the mountains of WNC that's how you get it, from a friend or a friend of a friend. I don't think it was as easy to get until this year, I now know several ways to get it.

Tim Smith from "Moonshiners" will be at a local liquor store here in town this Friday promoting his 'shine. So you say he's selling "fake" moonshine? Corn liquor is corn liquor no matter where you get it. Personally I think it's great being able to drive a mile up the road to the liquor store and having 4 or 5 different brands to choose from and knowing they are safe to drink.

Now, for my contribution to the recipe bank. A buddy of mine at work gave me this simple recipe for Apple Pie. I was skeptical at first because of how easy it sounded, but it turned out great. I took a couple of jars on a camping trip last Sept. and the guys loved it!

    Apple Pie...
    5 cups of apple juice
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 cup honey
    cinnamon sticks
1 fifth of Georgia Moon (or similar) moonshine

Combine apple juice, sugar and honey in a pot and bring to a gentle boil. Add 3 or 4 cinnamon sticks and simmer for a few minutes. Turn off the heat and cover the pot and allow it to cool for a while. Add the moonshine and stir. Pour into jars and add a slice of apple and one or two of the cinnamon sticks. It's good right away, but I think it has a smoother taste after a couple of days in the refrigerator. This makes about 2.5 quarts. If I want my batch to be a little stronger, I just add another 1/2 jar of moonshine. It's good both ways. My buddy uses the smaller pint sized canning jars and gives these as gifts for Christmas.

Another idea I saw was while watching Moonshiners a couple of weeks ago. "Tickle" put 4 candy canes in a blender and chopped them up. He then poured a quart of shine into a pot with the chopped-up candy canes and warmed it up until they dissolved. Don't boil it or the alcohol will evaporate. He poured it back into the jar, added a couple of peppermint leaves and sealed it up.
I tried this recipe and felt it needed more peppermint so I added 4 more candy canes. It's so good even my wife liked it. I gave one away as a Christmas gift this year. I may try using cinnamon candy sticks next time.
