Yea we just changed a t/c in a Tundra for this issue. When you get a "Bad One"
    you never forget the feeling.
Yes we have to do as we're told.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
... ^^^ ... That is exactly what my last Tacoma 4x4 had since day one. The 3 Gen 2 Prerunner Tacomas before that were perfect with zero drive line shutter.

That was actually the straw that caused me to leave Toyota for a while.

I will probably go back to Tacoma when the Gen 3 comes out and they have the bugs out of it ... but stay with a 4x2 (with rear locker) this time.

    Hi Guys,

New taco owner here,,, so have only been browsing TW for about a week. Please forgive if my observations have already been covered. But, with that, I'll add.

My truck now has over 700 miles on it but I've felt, from day one, what I'd describe as more an oscillation than a vibration (I've got a little electronics background (analog)). I've read comments here hinting that leafspring windup may be part of the problem. Limited mechanical background makes me think this true.

Then today while checking driveline angles, I realize my hanger bearing is mounted in a rubbery substance (I can move it radially, maybe 3/16") (I would never have guessed it would move this much). And, the electronics background leads me to suspect an oscillation could be established as energy is transferred back and forth (close match to definition of oscillation) between leafspring windup and carrier bearing movement (with of course near constant reinforcing torque provided by forward elements of the powertrain.

If carrier bearing movement is a factor, it's easy to imagine why driveline (shafts) alignment could have such a major impact on vibration/oscillation.

Do all 2nd gens have carrier bearings set in rubbery mounts?

Has anyone done video (have link?) of rear driveline movement (slight vibration/oscillation)?

    Chuck

Possible rubber in hanger bracket is so cold that its stiffness deadens oscillation?

Well, once again, the more I study, the more I realize I don't know. This internet is great. So, I'm off to more study and experimentation. This taco sure is an expensive toy.

Tomorrow night I should receive a Firestone Ride-Rite 2407 air helper spring kit. . . and more experimentation.

Very recent research tells me that folks who have tried rigid carrier bearing mounts just end up dealing with higher frequency oscillation/vibration at higher vehicle speed. I can live with a little oscillation at 5 to 20 MPH, I sure don't want that at 60 or 70 MPH. http://www2.dana.com/pdf/J3311-1-DSSP.pdf

Like an electronic circuit, several factors (apparently) influence this oscillations frequency and severity (amplitude) including axle wind-up, carrier bearing mount flex, driveline alignment, possibly even tire sidewall flex, , , and maybe others.

Sounds obvious that Toyota does not have a handle on this problem. So I, like many others, will be left to deal with the problem.

Thanks to all who contribute here. Hopefully I can now keep quiet and go back into the lurking (listen) mode. Chuck

I took my 2012 prerunner v6 into the dealership to get the prescribed
    repairs to fix this problem.
At first, they claimed that they could not get the truck to do that.
After one of the better mechanics drove it he said that yes, it is the axel
wrap problem and that Toyota has rescinded the tsb until they can come up
with a better fix. ie. Better leaf springs. I like the traction bar idea.
    Has anyone tried this?
According to the mechanic the problem stems from Toyota trying to make
    the truck ride nice.

He is correct in the tsb is no longer valid and partly because of trying to get it to ride "nice". I heard of no new spring idea because the tsb springs supposedly had a different spring angle. These trucks do not have a truck suspension. We have people complaining of a rough ride as it is. I gave one guy a ride in my plow truck and told him this is what a truck suspension use to feel like.
    Anyway.....

IMO nothing is going to make this truck ride vib free unless some major changes are done. They are going to play with more driveshaft angles and guidelines to improve it but that's it. Like anything else, they have to work within the guidelines they are handed. They wanted to use my truck at one point for a beta tester and I declined due to it being smooth in the speed range I normally drive in. I did not want to go backwards.
Springs don't normally cause vibes but a soft spring and axle wrap changes everything. Primary and secondary vibs are induced at different angles.
It's going to be a challenge for them.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/244535-drive-shaft-vibrations-solved-step-step.html

In the above thread, TscotR214, badger, and Hunter.V. have done a super job, IMO, presenting a logical explanation and fix for probably most, if not all, of the taco driveline vibrations I've seen discussed. My apologies to others participating in that thread who also have a good "handle on the problem" (the contributors I've mentioned just stand out for me).

As I said earlier, I'll try and keep quiet. It's not proving easy. But, turns out my vibrations, if any, are very minor (near new '13 & not lifted). I'm thinking that between a few "washboard" type roads here in town and the colorful descriptions of vibrations in many threads here in TW, I had managed to brainwash myself into thinking I had a problem. All things considered, and after measuring my driveline slopes and angles, and further road-testing, I'm satisfied I don't have a problem.

I did just grease the u-joints (I found 5 zerks) and glad I did, on this truck that has not traveled 900 miles yet. Close inspection of my driveline reveals the name Spicer, prominent on both labels and embedded in steel. At this point, I have to say, looks to me that on Bla, bla, bla, shut up Chuck.

See, read, study, and enjoy the thread linked to above.

I just read through this entire thread. Ugghh. Thanks to everyone for posting what's going on and staying on Toyotas Ass on this. Next I will read the link posted above by Chuck, I just wanted to get through this thread first and get a feel for where everyone is with this and damn it's a bitch!

Reason I'm even here is I've been looking at a 2014 Offroad, but this has me very gun shy to trade in my Tacoma that is running good [knock on wood] to have to deal with this crap.

And damn this pisses me off because no truck can even compare to the Tacoma in looks / ability department and the Boss just gave me the go ahead on a new TRD + OME Lift.

    DAMN YOU TOYOTA! DAMN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy smokes -- if you run out of sheep to count, you can read all 25 pages of this thread and get to sleep!

I am feeling I dodged a bullet, and that (just maybe) the dealer did me a favor in his unwillingness to perform the three steps outlined in the (now-defunct) T-SB-0249-012.

I have had the vibes in my 13 AC TRD-OffRoad 4x4 (8000 miles) since new. Dealer has documented that I gots 'em. Dealer tells me he won't do the TSB work because it doesn't solve the problem. I kick and scream. I file with CDSP and get an arbitration hearing scheduled for 1/09/2014 (will post the outcome). THEN, I read this enormo thread and find that the TSB might make the problem worse. Soooo, I dodged a bullet by not getting TSB'd. (How's that for looking on the bright side?)

Think for a minute about What You Want Toyota To Do.
While I was being pissed, what I wanted Toyota to do was spend a bunch of money making my truck right. Now, I am calmer, and I just want my truck right. And, probably in its heart, Toyota wants my truck right, too. But for whatever reason, Toyota is incapable of making it right. Therefore, getting my truck right is not an option.
So what do I want Toyota to do?
-- Replace my Taco with another vibe-y one?
-- Refund my money so I can buy a POS Nissan?
-- Give me a handful of hush money?
    -- What??? I really don't know.
    Thoughts?

This thread has given me a ton of insight which will aid in the preparation for my arbitration hearing. Thanks to all who posted worthwhile info.

Hey Guys funny how problems come in bunches. The front dif bearing and front wheel bearings just went bad now am having vibration problems on take of and at low speed. Fixed the dif and bearings what the heck do I do about the vibration? My Taco is an '07 Access Cab with 95K on it so no help from the dealer. What fix if any work on the vibe? BTW not lifted.

Could be your carrier bearing. Might need to be replaced.
