Complete TPMS Disable Guide

In October I made a vessel out of a 4 inch length of 3 inch diameter ABS and two caps. I drilled a hole in one cap and pulled a regular valve stem through it. I then placed the 4 sensors inside and glued it together. Pressurized to 32psi and have not had any problems from -30C to + 20C. It is jammed behind the passenger seat.

I was getting a second set of rims for my winters which prompted this. It is hard to imagine the TPMS systems in these trucks could be so antiquated in terms of features. The reprogramming with seasonal swaps is just plain foolish, and likely a cash grab.

It's no cash grab for Toyota. They would much rather have their techs doing work that gets them more profit than a 1/2-hour labor-only job.

You can change the sensor serial numbers yourself with the cable and software, or you can equip your winter wheels with "clonable" sensors that are programmed to duplicate your stock sensors.

 

If Toyota would rather have their techs doing something else they have the ability to change the system design with little expense and risk, no legislation dictates the features.

My 05 Grand Cherokee could be programmed with two sets of sensors and my 2011 just recognized new sensors without the need to do anything. The sensors could be had for $80 for a set of 4 OEM units.

As I said there is no good rationale for such a minimal system these days. I know I can change the serial numbers seasonally when I switch the wheels but chose just to remove them in this case and go real old school with a tire gauge. I had difficulty finding the clonable sensors in my area and anyone who could speak knowledgeably about them while Toyota Canada wanted $120 per sensor.

Not a deal breaker with the truck, but something that could improve the consumer experience if addressed.

 

It is great, that we have such knowledgeable electronics technicians/engineers, on this forum.

With the increased use of electronics; this is more and more valuable.

The legislation is from the US, and Canada DOT generally follows USDOT.
Your pressure vessel "bypass" for the TPMS would be a violation of federal law (unenforceable, but disabling the system is illegal)

Rich#, I am familiar with the legislation and was never arguing the existence. My point was that Toyota has implemented the most rudimentary system possible.

The TPMS system is not required (legislated) in Canada and is supplied at the discretion of the manufacturer based on trim level in most cases. It is required on all US vehicles from model 2008 onward (which most of you know).

I have an 07 and connected the blue and r/w wire together from the module behind the AC dash and it disappeared.
I also notice that when i start my truck, it starts funny. When it starts, the truck didn't give the usual startup hum. It sounded more like a low hum. Didn't feel like the truck i know.

 

Mark that doesn't sound like a good thing to do. I believe you are supposed to connect one to ground and the other one is supposed to do nothing. I have an 06 and the Blue and green wire I cut them, I tried attaching the green to ground and my truck started revving higher(did it while truck was on), but I believe the blue is the only one thats supposed to be connected to ground.

Also, I cut both the wires on my 06, still can't figure it out.

funny how different folks address this issue,

-sensor in a cherry bomb (pressurized)
-Bypass the circuit (ground or 12v)
-get rid of the light
a) remove light indicator source. (remove bulb)
b) cover light indicator.(cover bulb)

Anybody do this on an 09? I cant find IJ1 for the life of me. Any help appreciated.

 

I just did this mod to my 2009. I didn't cut the power to the TPMS system. I Just turned off the light.

My IJ1 was taped almost behind another larger harness. I located the blue wire, cut it, tapped into the harness side of that blue wire, and jumper-ed it to the yellow wire in another harness as reloadedkid did in post #13.

Worked like a charm.

 

I performed this mod on my 2006 Tacoma and it worked great. Just traded my 2006 in for a 2015. Have same issue with summer & winter tires. Can I look at doing the same mod.

I think I found the plug it was hiding behind the same harness and taped there. But I have 3 wires (green/blue/black) the blue is in the same port as in your picture but I wanted to ask before I start cutting. Truck is a V6 6Spd 2015 DCSB Off Road edition. Any help would be appreciated.
