Carrier Bearing replacement help, splitting the driveline?

    I set out to replace my u-joints and my carrier bearing today, and I thought I had it covered. I read up on everything before hand online, and watched a few videos, but none showed specifically how to get the "yolk" off the driveline, behind the carrier bearing, in order to get the carrier bearing itself off.
    If my wording isn't correct... here's the part in particular I'm talking about.

    I've got all the u-joints out, took the nut and washer off the yolk, and tried hammering the yolk off, but it just won't budge, and I've hammered on it pretty good. Any insight? I'd rather not take it to carquest in the morning... Am I missing something?

    Wtf? Seriously? Not every problem is solved with a hammer. Especially driveline. If you want to keep it in balance and not crack and destroy the yoke.

    You need a puller for that to be safe. I did mine recently. Puller makes it balls easy.

    He obviously doesn't have a puller on hand or he would be using it.
    Replaced my carrier bearing three times without a puller.

    You consider hitting out u-joints with a hammer bad too?

    Hell no, that's how I do ujoints. But I've broken yokes by hitting them with a hammer. Breaking this one would really fawk you up. I don't really care how you do it, doing things right is how I recommend people do things, when they're asking for advice.

    You can rent pullers from the auto parts store, or buy em' cheap.

    Yes, seriously... Not every problem is solved with a hammer but this one is. After the nut is removed, get a rubber mallet and hit the yolk away from the rest of the shaft. A puller is a waste of time, half a dozen good whacks will safely remove the yolk without doing any damage to the drive line. There's no way in hell giving the yolk a few hits with a hammer is going to mess with the balance of the drive shaft and I highly, highly doubt you could hit it hard enough to crack it unless there were already underlying stress cracks.

    Now... I tried getting the carrier bearing off, and this is as far as I got. What is a good method for getting the center section off? I've read that pounding it on with a socket is a good method to get it back on? Any other input?

    Further research tells me I need a jaw puller to get the remaining bearing off. A tool I don't have, is there any other way to get that sucker off?

    allpro long travel, shackle flip with ome dakars, cruisin offroad bumpers and sliders, 4.88 gears with arb's front and rear, budbuilt skids.
    why not just go buy a puller, that way you have it for next time.

    mostly stock
    I stuck mine in a vise (around the bearing) and used a BFH. I just slid the yoke on and insulated it with a chunk of wood and went to whompin' on it. Maybe try some heat? Won't have that problem next time though...

    Ya, but it's about half and half weather it fixes the vibes or not, so I wouldn't do it if you are a princess and the pea type of dude.
