So I got my first free oil change at 5k and happy to get the free service. They tell me my tacoma is conventional oil, if so why are they suggesting every 5k? I thought we are to change our oil every 3k....

Curious the group thoughts on this.

5K mi. is the norm for Tacos. Yoyu should be getting a free tire rotation as well for your free service.

My wife has a '12 Highlander. Her's takes synthetic oil and is changed every 10k mi. per Toyota Corp.

Thanks - I wonder why they switched 2013 to conventional?

All 4.0l Tacomas are conventional. A lot of us use synthetic anyway.

    2.7 is synthetic 0w20 at 5k intervals.
    4.0 is conventional 5w30 at 5k intervals.
They didn't switch... the 4.0 has always taken 5w30 except for one year when they went to 0w20, and revised the manuals PDQ.

Toyota, and no other automaker has recommended 3k intervals in 40 years.
3k is pushed by places like Iffy Lube and oil manufacturers.
Toyota actually allowed for up to 7500 miles before they started putting the "Maintenance Required" idiot light on the dash.

I agree but I wonder if this applies under boost conditions like TRD blower or custom turbo setup?

You're good with a quality synthetic at 5k+.

I would never run a conventional in a turbo application. When you shut down, the turbo is still spinning down, the bearings are hot, and the oil flow has stopped. Conventional oil cokes too easily under those conditions.
