My cousin and I are reserving that Thursday to explore some backcountry, save the date if you're interested in a chill 4x4 run. We'll either check out an area south of Superior or an area near Gisela, both about an hour from the east valley.

South of Superior- This is the Battleaxe Rd/Walnut Canyon area, a nice desert area with a few natural points of interest.

Gisela Area- This is a medium elevation area with... who knows, it looks like a nice area on the map I've never been.

My thought going forward is that Gisela would be cool if there were a recent snow at that time. Otherwise, south of Superior might be the first choice. If anyone else wants to go they can help decide. I have both areas mapped out, etc. Either way, it'll be a good excuse to drive on dirt and enjoy some AZ.

EDIT: This trip is for the Gisela area...

Yeah... just using Gisela as a reference point because there's nothing really out there. More specifically I'm talking about FR 1387/894 south of Gisela going east up into the mountains. Could be a little snow if there is a recent storm, but not counting on it.

Milota, good to know... Battleaxe might not be as big a deal(?) but Gisela area trip is very rugged and very remote.

Some information on the Battleaxe/Walnut area, and some more. Moderately easy low stress trip in a fairly popular area.

There is no real info on the Gisela-area trail. It's not an established 4x4 trail by any means, and some of it is a very remote and rugged area with unknown conditions and access. We have to cross private property, but that shouldn't be a problem. I have it routed in the 2700-5000' range. This is an exploration/recon to see what's there possibly face adversity.

Plenty of time to finalize plans.

We'll need to decide on a destination and meet up location.

    A) South of Superior, or B) near Gisela?

Figured anyone planning on going can chime in, but I can make the executive decision if nobody cares.

Let's go ahead and run Gisela then! Tonto Creek is nice and low right now and Battleaxe might be better during the spring bloom anyway.

I contacted the landowner and got a combination for a gate to a certain area. The weather for Thursday in the AO looks to be low-to-mid 60s and clear. This won't be as "casual" as Battleaxe, so come prepared... this is exploratory into remote 4x4 country, be ready for anything. Expect a long day.
