Hands down the A-10 is badass that is the only true provider of CAS and can come home with heavy damage. Building a plane around that gat! Pilot sitting in a titanium tub! I was at the Grove for several years in the mid to late 90's. I recall one going down during training. So many of our weapon systems are over 30 + years old way over their life expectancy. We just send them to the depots to make them better than new.....just look at the M1 tank!

A few months ago I had to divert into Italy to take a MX crew to an A10 the had an engine flameout. Upon arrived I was shocked to see a pilot training buddy of mine was the Hawg driver and the A10 is the only in history to have an air to air kill. u4aqere4_5c0b1a45e1ac97d6fd639eb136dcb0bbbaca1e7d.jpg

What's awesome is if the gun is fired more than 2 sec it can stall the plane. I like to think the AC-130H (only 8 in the world) is an amazing aircraft as well. 105mm cannon, 40mm cannon and 2- 25mm chain guns. Everyone the 105mm fires the tail section moves 6ft in flight

OME all around. SPC UCA. This and that.
The A-10 and the SR-71 are my favorite airplanes. The warthog for its toughness and close relationship with and boots on the ground and the the SR-71 for being so far ahead of its time and still holding records to date

Before I see it in the thread I feel I should debunk a myth. A lot of people believe the aircraft was designed for the gun. The aircraft was actually designed without the gun and test with a 20 mm cannon similar to what the 16 has. Once the aircraft was selected a bid went out to find the best gun.

I thought the a-10 was built around the gun? A true article out there that says this?

Love this plane. Seen it many times. Also love the AC-130's. Used to see them practice at hurbie all the time. My friend who was Special forces said they saved their butts on well more than one occasion.

Think I heard about that. Didn't they drop a bomb on it as it was taking off?

What I heard was that it was tested with the Vulcan because the Avenger was not ready for operation when the test articles were ready to fly.

According to the two books I have on the A-10 this is true, the four prototypes were equipped with M61 20mm gatling guns and first test flight was May '72 and the GAU-8 wasn't installed on the prototype until Feb '74.
Grew up loving the A-10s and got to work on them when I was stationed in Germany, deployed with them to Bagram in '06. Best plane I've worked on and wish I could go back to them.
