The other end of the spectrum of a horse that will not move come hell or high water? haha. I can't imagine that ends well either. That is a lot of mass to have crashing around other horses and equipment...

yeah, if you only have a few disasters during hitches, you've done well.

Once you learn how they tick they aren't bad. They're good at intimidation, just have to play their games right back at them.

 

My understanding is that they are pretty darned smart? Guess they can tell when they got you spooked?

 

There is definitely an inherent amount of risk involved with dealing with big critters. Most of the risk can be mitigated by actually being dedicated, consistent, and doing the proper training. To me the largest and most consistent problem is a horse owner that half asses their training and handling, not the horse itself. There is always the "manure occurs" circumstances though and you are dealing with another intelligent creature. Its not like dirtbiking where this is risk, but at least only one brain is involved in the decision making haha.

And they are smart don't get me wrong. The most simplistic way and starting point of it all is based on "who moves who". The dominant horse can make any other horse move as it wants. So if a horse pushes you around, you apply pressure (by swinging a rope for example) and move its feet. Then it stems from there.
