I am planning on getting a Taco with a self contained pop up on the back to live out of year round. I have looked at four wheel campers, northstar offroada, and palomino's.

Can a taco handle a wet 2000 lb camper 24/7? What type of suspension upgrades are recommended?
What other self contained campers are out there?

My budget is about 50k for the truck and camper. I have never owned a taco or camper.

Any help would be much appreciated!

A Tacoma can't handle that much weight in the bed of the truck. Depending on the configuration, the maximum payload is around 1300 pounds. Tundra?

Too heavy for a Tacoma..You could add heavy duty springs and air bags but you would still be overloading the truck. If youwere to have an accident hauling that weight there could be big legal problems headed your way..

The Taco's bed is too small to fit a camper that you would live in full time.

For $50k, you can get a full size truck with a very nice camper.

Not sure what your plans are but have you looked into Sportsmobile.com they sell used as well and they have a location near you. Good Luck!

Ok cool. Thanks for the info!
I thought I might be a little crazy. Any ideas on a full sized truck with camper? Have any of you owned a pop up camper before?

    It all depends your goals.

    Are you wheeling your camper?
    Climate?
    Buying new or used?

If I was to own a fullsize + camper for my needs (weekend camping) I would pick a Tundra + FWC hands down.

    BUT

If I was to LIVE out of a camper, I would want a fullsize diesel + large fiberglass camper.

Diesel will get better MPG and more power. You will appreciate having a larger camper that is great in all conditions.

A GMC Van Skool bus is what you need. I can see it.

Here's the start of a little monster. I bet he'd take 2.5k or less (I don't know the owner)

The taco is at full capacity when the bed is full of air.

I kept my pop up cab over when we sold our full size Dodge to go with the Tacoma. We put the camper in a small trailer and tow it with the truck.

Now that we've camped out of it a couple of times I prefer this configuration because it's still very aerodynamic but I can unhook it from the truck once at our destination; this was always a pain in the past.

Also the pop-up is light so I haven't needed to upgrade the truck but am looking into airbags to help those tiny springs out. So far we just distribute the weight on the trailer to keep it off the tongue.

Lots of options out there, good luck!
