I'd get a Trail 4runner. Put little lift and a set of 33s on it and be done.

The 4Runner is going to drive much better on the road, rack/pinion steering, IFS, are going to give it much better street manors. Acceleration should be about the same, as they are similar enough in hp/torque when factoring in gearing. Its much easier to get the top back on the Jeep, as compared to getting it back on the 4Runner if you decide to remove it. And the aftermarket support for the Jeep is ridiculous.

Between the two I would go with the Jeep. Wranglers still come in manual and are all convertible. Plus you'll still have a Toyota

if you arent going to wheel it hard you could get a wrangler sport and mod the crap out of it. like chris said, the aftermarket for jeep is huge. You can really build it the way you want it

    but the rubicons are sick.

The 4Runner is nice, that's for sure. I was considering one before I got the Jeep. My vehicle I looked at were:

    FJ
    4Runner
    JKUR

FJ has so many blind spots, that I needed CCTV to see shit around me. The fucking 3 wipers triggered an OCD counting syndrome every time I turned them on. I didn't like the stereo, and having only 2 windows that go down, would piss me off if I had to evacuate a fart.

The 4Runner was nice, comfy, drove nice, great stereo. The sheet metal seems like it would dent if you looked at a reflection in it. inside has a lot of space. Downsides are, I would have had to put a lot of money into lift, tires, skids, to get it to perform how I wanted it to off road.

Now....The Jeep. I went into this HATING the fucking Jeeps. Turns out, both my cousins have them, and have over 120k miles on each. No major issues either. Shocker #1.

I drove one, and it......drove pretty nice. Shocker #2. As long as you realize its a solid front/rear axels, and know how they drive. THEY DO NOT drive like a car. recirculating ball steering is not as precise as R&P. The front doors are sealed from water coming in, that it was taking me 3 to 4 attempts at closing the fucking door. The factory stereo (Optional Alpine) is pretty dam good. Wind in the cab with the windows down, isn't bad, because the thing is shaped like a brick. If you are going 70 mph on the highway, and a butterfly farts, you will change lanes.....because its shaped like a brick. Over 70 mph, there is wind noise.....because.....yup....its shaped like a brick. MPG are about the same as my Tacoma, but the Jeep isn't a Prius, so if you find a 15 mpg week, don't even bother with the hypermiling, because it doesn't matter much as to how you drive. You will get between 15 and 19 mpg. It depends on what the Jeep wants to give you that week. My first off road excursion with it blew my mind. Where I would take a trail, that exploited the Taco (and scared my Dodge), the Jeep made it seem easy. Its much better than I am, that's for sure.

About the same. JKUR's are going from 40k to 48k out here, depending on how they are optioned, and how the dealer wants to jam it in your ass.

Bingo. The Jeep makes a pretty shitty truck. So does the 4Runner.

    Too few to list.
Offroad = Jeep - try sitting in the back seat for an hour trip.
    On and Offroad = 4Runner

It depends on what you are going to do with the vehicle. The Rubicon is far better for serious off-road. The 4runner is a much better ride and more reliable for moderate off-road and everyday use.

Of course I would say go with the Yota, because I'm a Yota man. But the Rubicon is very nice, and extremely capable right off the floor. But as you don't intend to do much offroading with it, you might as well get the Runner. You'd undoubtedly pay a lot less, and there's also Toyota's reliability and great resale value.

The '12 and up JK's were reported by Forbes to have the most resale value of any other manufactured vehicle.

If you aren't buying it specifically for a trail rig, go test drive them both and see which one you want. You'll spend most of your time on road, I'm sure.

I've been out with them both - the Trail Edition has a rear locker, crawl control, and some other cool stuff - but I was able to crawl up stuff with no drama at all that had a little wheelspin going on on the 4Runner.

Granted, this is without the rear locked and without crawl control - but they're a fair amount heavier than a Tacoma:

Go test drive them both and see what you prefer.

Did they ever figure out why the transmission would puke fluid all over the exhaust when in 4lo? That steered me clear of them.
