Just had my 10k service done and noticed on the service receipt that they used "020-020 Synthetic Oil". The 5k service receipt said "5-30 Chevron Engine Oil" The notes also state "changed engine oil to OEM spec".

What's that about? To my understanding these trucks come with standard oil. Did they change something in 2014? And is 20/20 the right weight?

I asked to upgrade to synthetic and they basically advised against it but said they would do it for like an extra $50.

But from my understanding the 4 cylinders get syn and the V6 get standard oil.

I don't think there is any difference in the 14's though.

Me either, thought maybe it was something new and fancy. Looks like I'll have to go back there and ask what the hell they did.

A little of this and a little of that.
Chances are the oil was 0W-20. No worries, they were just performing your next "mod".

    Is 0-20 not too light?

    For the 4.0 it is.

2.7 has 0w20 synthetic from the factory.
4.0 requires 5w30... synthetic or conventional is fine.

Did some digging, found some info - sounds like the 4.0L on the FJ uses 0-20 standard? Anyway, not the end of the world I guess.

Not exactly the same engine. The FJ 4.0L has dual VVT.

Looks like you had a not so smart technician working on your truck. I'd take it back and tell them they put the wrong oil in your truck. That's why I change my own oil.

    Ditto.

Nobody on this planet gives more of a shit about you and your truck than you do.

    +1

    Full price - $36 for a 6-pack of M1, $5 for a Toyota filter.

Once a year, Costco runs a $10 instant rebate, so $25 for a 6-pack, I buy enough for both cars for a year.
$88 for a box of 20 filters from Titus-Will Toyota.

Whoever did your first oil change put the wrong stuff in. The v6 Tacoma has required 0w-20 oil since 2012 models.

TMGO 0w-20 is one of the best 0w-20 oils on the market, it has tons of Molly, and is manufactured by exxon. There are a few used oil analysis of this oil in v6 tacomas on bobistheoilguy.com, they show very good wear patters for this oil.

I don't run anything but 0w-20 in my Camry or Tacoma. :)

Not to mention the fact that the oil cap on my 2012 says 5W-30 right on it. 0W-20 is definitely not recommended for V6 Tacomas.
