He's asking $13,800, but 2 years ago I bought the same truck with a 4 cyl and 134,000 for $12,200 + taxes/tags/title The only difference is this has a V-6 and a bed liner & cover.

Looks like it needs tires. The tonneau is a super cheap snap cover. Id go in at 12,500 and see what they counter.

Just put $8000 wholesale in (and bought for myself):
    2002 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner 4x2 4dr shortbed
    Automatic
    3.4L V-6
    TRD Package Off-Road
    Power windows/locks/mirrors

    Am/Fm/CD
    127k miles
Clean CarFax with all maintenance done at Toyota Dealership
    Water pump/belt at 90k service
1 owners and new Michelin tires.
The unit has a $12k retail. If yours is as clean as it looks the $12/$12.5 is fine for retail. Clean is good....

I don't know what the market is like in TN for these trucks but I paid $12,800 for mine:

    2003 TRD
    5-speed manual
    v6
    SR5 package
    4x4
    ext cab
    with 88k miles
Very clean with only a couple of slightly noticeable hail dents on the hood

4x4 is worth $2k to me. So I'd go in with $11,500 using the lack of 4x4 as leverage.

And lay it down, make it easy for them just say I'll pay $11,500 for this truck because X,Y, and Z and let them answer yes or no. If your not a haggler dont take the game to their court. I left the dealership when I bought my last vehicle and they called me on my way home.

Thanks for the input guys. :) He told me on the phone he didn't have a lot of play room, so not sure I can get him down in the $12,500 range, but I'm going to probably start around $12,000 and see where I can go to... I don't mind paying a little more b/c I can see the maintenance history and know it was well taken care of... But $1,000 for tires right off the bat is going to stink...

If the belt / water pump has not been done you might see how they will treat you

2 good reasons to come down off the price when you go see him. :duel:

Why should you have to pay for tires, thats why I would only offer 12-12.5

I paid $5000 for my 2000 over three years ago.....purchased in California, totally California usage up until I moved to VA, needed some work, but including the new tires and various suspension stuff it came to about $7000 by the time I got it all sorted out, had 141,000 on the odometer at time of purchase and crappy tires....

California clean frame, Virginia salt is gonna kill it if I don't move soon...

If this is a dealer, of course he is going to tell you he doesn't have that much 'wiggle room', all of them say that...

Haggle, there are more out there, unless you feel like you are getting a 'cherry'..

I just can not believe how much the value of these trucks stays elevated....

The price comparison between prerunner and 4x4 is a couple grand atleast. The price they are asking for this prerunner is what most 4x4's sell for in this same condition. I'd try to get it at $10k if possible.

Also, check for rusted frame and find out if the t-belt has been changed. If any parts of the frame look freshly painted try to see what it looks like underneath by scraping to the metal

The truck has been undercoated, the timing belt was replaced at 60,000 miles...

So, basically I would need tires soon.

I used to deal with buying and selling vehicles and have learnt a lot over the years. I can assure you on used cars he has more than likely thousands of dollars to negotiate. New cars are a little different, but used cars actually make more profit for the dealers than most new cars do. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $11,000-$11-500 for that truck. It might also benefit you to check out the Tacomas out of state for instance like here in Texas. Also remember, don't be afraid to walk away from the deal. Remember this one thing when you are negotiating...

"The dealer wants your money more than he wants the truck"

    That doesn't mean anything.

Did he say he will NOT take 12,500?

    Don't make assumptions.

If you are dealing with cash in your hand, then play the negotiating game. If you are financing, it's more expensive every time.

Oh... you are at a dealership. Profit is built in. Don't plan on getting the best deal possible there.

Op, the one you are looking at is not a double cab....you stated that is what you wanted...

    This.

I got my '08 with 53k on it for 13.5
Even though that's a Prerunner, it's a 10 year old truck with 120k on it.
    $10k or less.
People are asking (and getting) too much for these old trucks.

And will need another timing belt in 40,000... if it doesn't need a water pump before then.

Hope the undercoating isn't hiding rust.
