Was that a reference to my Fuelly? Because I didn't always correct the hwy/city percentage as it automatically figures it. At least when I entered it by text. I would go back in when I remembered when I got on the cpu, but not always.

I do it daily and use miles and gallons to calculate every fill up. I go 70mph too.

Actually, yes some of us are.

The biggest things are (a) transmission type, and (b) speed. I have a stick, like a man with a truck should, and don't try to race anyone with a truck, and get 24-25 average over 35K miles so far.

None of that hypermiling shit either, this is normal back and forth to work and some light duty house-hauling.

I track every tank of gas in my vehicles. I've had my truck since September 1 and my worst tank average, the very first tank, almost all around town, was 16.2 mpg. It's improved steadily since them with in-town mileage ranging from 17.9 to 18.6. Highway mileage has varied between 20 flat up to 22.4. One thing most of us don't think about is the aerodynamics of our vehicles. They sit pretty high and they catch a lot of air. I've noticed my mileage suffers when I drive into a strong headwind for an extended time. Finally, they're not the lightest vehicles. Manufacturers improve their vehicles mileage by building them lighter.

Here, just so you can see what I mean.

    http://www.fuelly.com/driver/xaks/tacoma-2

No login required, that's the viewable fuelly page for my ride, going back to when I bought her with 4K on her in May of 2012. Incidentally, I turned over 39,000 this afternoon.

The mileage listed here is by TANK, by the way. So the 27.7 best you see there was done over 400 miles and over the course of a week. Not one day's driving at 65 on the highway or anything.

    EDIT to add

    And, if you look at

    http://www.fuelly.com/driver/xaks/tacoma

My first Taco, the '06, the mileage is pretty close for that one too!

    I personally don't care. I'm driving a truck, not a unibody Hybrid.

I get 19-20-21 in the summers. With the winter gas out now, I've been getting 16-18 and a bit more.

Interesting theory, but my wife's 2500HD with a 7" lift and 35" mud tires and a curb weight of over 7500 lbs gets 18mpg. The last road trip it was icy (drove at 50-55mph) and we got over 20mpg. Even around town it gets better mileage than my 4000 lb tacoma does on the highway! lol.

For the 4 cyl./ Prerunner replies... the OP has a 4WD OFF ROAD. There must be a million other gas mileage threads for the other models?

Having varying speeds for vehicles on the highway isn't necessarily unsafe. Some studies show it's safer. When traffic is constantly moving around each other people are more aware. They have to react to a dynamic situation. It's when everyone is doing the same speed that people zone out and forget what's in their blind spots.

In my state there is posted speed limits for different vehicles. In some places it is the norm for cars to be doing 75-80. On that same stretch a school bus cannot legally break 60 mph. If it was unsafe I don't think it would be allowed.

Drive slower, leave earlier, stay to the right, be courteous, plan ahead and the gas mileage will come.

I have a 4x4 regular cab, and I'm averaging just under 21mpg according to fuelly. I can see maybe getting 24mpg once in a while, but not as a long term average.

You also have 2 less cylinders than the op. I'd just trade the truck in IMO and buy a nasa rocket.

I got my 2011 SR5 used with 38,000 mi. Was getting 17 mpg at first, but after a couple of months I was getting about 21 mpg! That was with the stock dunlops. Now I'm back down to 17mpg again with my 265 cooper AT3's.

Dropped in a K&N in my stock filter box, hoping to see any change in mpgs. A coworker of mine swears by K&N, so I figured I give it a shot. Actually got worse gas mileage! Even disconnected the battery to let the computer reset to compensate for the increased air flow, still felt like it was gradually getting worse and worse. Started with about 18-19mpgs with the Coopers and now dropping below 17mpgs. Put in a stock replacement filter but now I think I may be running a little rich, going top try and reset the computer again to see if I get back to normal.

Don't get a drop-in K&N...waste of money. Stick with stock replacements, better filtration anyway.

Don't worry, pretty sure its safe to go 5 under the speed limit. It's called a speed "limit" not speed "minimum".

Diesel. It's tuned a little, but just a mild tune, 480 HP or so.
