Anyone ever hear of throwing a handfull of rock salt in from time to time to prevent creosote buildup? Overheard some guys at work years ago talking about it. I know a hot fire prevents it, so I assume the rock salt must reall get the fire burning hot.

I wouldn't add salt to the equation , I would be worried about it eating metal / mortar

My thoughts too....plus possibly warping something depending how hot it gets when you add it.

Burn dry , seasoned wood and clean your chimney once per season and you won't have a problem

Sometimes it's easier to measure that way. For instance, my stored stacks are 8 feet high and 8 feet wide, so there's two face cord per rick. Three ricks works out to roughly more than two cord, since most of my wood is cut 20" rather than 16".

Doesn't work; you'll still get Creosote buildup. And like Oz said it'll contribute to corrosion inside your woodstove (and chimney, if it's metal). Not sure on the effect on mortar, but I'm sure it doesn't contribute to its longevity.

Is the 1911 for stirring the pot roast, or for intimidating the stove into cooking it faster?

    Yeah, no kidding.
When I bought my first 9mm you could get the 250 round Remington UMC bulk packs for 40 bucks. Last time I saw one it was $85, and that was over a year ago.
EDIT: It's pretty absurd that 250 rounds of ammo now costs nearly as much as a cord of tree length

So sick of reading about how there's no real ammo shortage anymore, and that supply is finally catching up with demand. Anybody who says that clearly hasn't tried ammo shopping in my area.
Edit: At least I can still find firewood around here; no shortage of that in Maine.

Back on topic, I've gone through nearly twice as much wood this year as last, at this rate I'm definitely going to have to bite the bullet and buy a cord or two by the summer. My wife had to go on temp disability so she was home for 8 weeks, usually we'd set the thermostat to about 63 and let the oil furnace keep the house warm while we where at work but with my wife home she was burning wood all day.

Plus this has been the coldest winter we've had in this area for years. High of 10 yesterday with a low of around -3F. I know that's nothing compared with some of you but pretty damn cold for me.

Picked up a Napoleon wood stove a couple weeks ago for $300. Previous owners barely used it, and it's in like new condition. Can't wait to install it. I've been wanting wood heat since we bought our house

A post inviting him over to the gun blog so that I could make a single statement about ammo prices would have taken up just as much space on here as my post complaining about ammo pricing.
But, if you look, I've edited it for content.

And here, to keep this one militantly on topic, here's a shot from this fall, working on next year's firewood.
