adding AUX in plug to stock 2nd gen

Anyone know if this would work on Tacoma stock stereo?

I know about the USA-Spec adapter and other like it for $80+ but I'm looking to stay under $20. I don't care about displaying text on the head unit or controlling the device from the head unit. I just want a simple plug to transfer the sound.

I've got the head unit from a 2010 tacoma. It has a "DISC/AUX" button but I don't have an aux plug.

There is a hole in the back next to the fm antenna hole. It's smaller than the FM antenna plug. Assuming it's for SAT antenna maybe?

Another random thing is that this HU has buttons labelled as if it's a cd changer but there is no "load" button for adding more than 1 cd. Seems odd.

 

I am looking to do the same thing. I have an 08 Tacoma and it has no aux input. If you end up doing this and it works let me know.

My main concern is that the harness would not fit into the back of the stock head unit.

Please keep me posted if this works or you find another cheap solution.

 

For you, doing the Aux. mod linked below is probably going to be your best bet. I do believe that if that plug/harness in the OP worked, more people would have used it.
The mod listed below isn't all that hard, as I've done it. You just have to watch where you stick the soldering iron as I messed up a resistor or something and now the backlight on my stereo flashes on/off or works some and doesn't others, or it's just dim. But the end result is pretty nice, and it was cheap to do!

My 2005 now has aux in. The 1 thing I have to point out is that this plug did NOT work on my '05 stereo. It only works if you have the DISC-AUX button. I found a 2010 cd player on craigslist. Direct plug and play.

I got the plug on ebay for $15. Ordered Friday and it arrive Monday. Same thing is on some Bangkok website for $4.99 but it says allow 40 days for processing and shipping.

I had to unplug this 20 pin from the back of the stereo. No idea what it does since everything still worked when I removed it.



After plugging in the new aux cable and running it down behind dash to center console, I just taped the old plug up so it won't rattle.



The line wasn't long enough to go past the front cup holders so I added an extension that I had layin around so that I could run back to here. I'll put a grommet on that some day.



And the proof. The sound is really quiet so next I'll tackle that but at least it works. The display says "CD in" because there really is a CD in there. Pushing the disc-aux button cycles between the 2 options.



All total, I'm out about $75. But, it's all the functions i want and I don't anything flashy aftermarket tempting someone to smash a window.

 

after driving a few days with it:

1. No bass. (fixed)
2. Really quiet.

I fixed the bass issue but cutting off the 1/8 male plug and soldering on a panel mount female plug. Mounted it under the AC/heater panel. Then ran a better quality cable from phone/ipod to the plug. Bass is normal normal now. The wire seemed to be good quality. Each line had insulation rather than a spray on coating. I think the original male plug was the issue.

I know how to fix the volume issue, but not sure when I'll get around to it. Just need a small amp because the phone/ipod puts out much lower voltage than the headunit is looking for. There are DIY or off the shelf options for <$30. Search for "headphone amp". Some options are "Opa Amp", "Boostaroo", "FiiO", "CMOY", etc.

So, even if I buy the little amp to boost the Aux line, I'll still be out only about $100 total and really only gained MP3 (CD-R) capability and an aux in plug. Yes, I could have gotten an aftermarket for that much or less but I didn't want the look of an aftermarket. Maybe it's in my head but I htink the 2010 stereo sounds more clear than my 2005 version.
