CEL P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419

I have an 06 Prerunner and every other week, my CEL comes on. It usually goes off in a day or two, so I never messed with it. I decided to get the codes checked out and it reports the codes as P043E, P043F, P2401, P2402, and P2419. I quick google hit came up with the TSB http://www.empirepao.com/tsb/T-EG025-06.pdf

I am way out of warranty, is this a DIY type job and is the canister available rather inexpensively at a recommended place? I can't seem to locate the part easily. Before buying a new one, is their other easy repair tips?

Lame question, but does this have anything to do with the air filter area, because I changed out the air filter with a permanent washable K&N filter.

The evap canister is back at the gas tank. It seems easily accessible and not to hard to replace considering you have to remove the fuel tank assembly too. Just do it with the tank as close to empty as you dare.

I have no idea but odds are it's an expensive dealer only item.

Before you replace canister check if the filter in the canister is plugged. I dont know why Toyota went to this setup but there is air filter for fuel and I doubt anybody is cleaning that thing

did you ever figure out what was going on and fix it? this just happened to me yesterday and i cleared the CEL and it has not come back on yet, just curious of what ti expect or how you fixed the problem

 

I have been throwing this series of codes on cold mornings (below 25*) for the last week or so.

 

My CEL came on and my cheap code reader was seeing codes error codes "N/A", "N/A", P2401, P2402, and P2419. If I cleared the codes, they would return about once a week. I had 123,000mi on the truck when the codes first appeared.

I put up with this for about a year and finally coughed up the dough to fix it per that same TSB, EG025-06. The TSB directs you to replace the Vapor Canister aka Charcoal Canister which originally had a defective design. The canister has since been upgraded to a non-defective design, although the part number for the canister did not change.

The canister houses a vacuum pump that comes on once a week, usually at night as I understand, and spends 5hrs sucking down the emissions hoses to check for leaks. If the vacuum pump fails to work, you get the five error codes described. I've read that charcoal canisters on other vehicles have been ruined by overfilling the gas tank, and I tend to cram as much gas in the tank as possible so maybe that broke it.

The FSM directs you to remove the entire gas tank in order to replace the canister. I read somewhere that dealers will sometimes remove the bed to do this work. Hayne's (or was it Chilton's?) says you don't need to do either, and the local dealer only quoted me $120 in labor, so I did not remove the tank or the bed.

You'll need a new "vapor canister", part # 77740–04020, MSRP $360 or $260 from mail-order places like toyotapartsales.com. I'd also read that it is wise to replace the "vapor canister filter", part # 77746‑04010, MSRP $68 or $50 from mail-order places. So I bought both.

Replacement took me about 2.5hrs, half of which was spent trying to get the electric harness to release from the vapor canister. The canister is a tight fit to get in and out of its little space between the bed and the frame, but with strong fingers it's totally doable.

The vapor canister filter is just a plastic housing with a 3"x4" paper filter inside. I can't really imagine any cause to replace it, but you need to remove it in order to remove the canister, and I broke the old filter while removing it so it was nice to have a new filter on hand.

It's been 8 days since I replaced the canister and filter, and the error codes are yet to return. I'll update this post if they do.

I love it, 33k miles and I got the same as above. Time to hit the stealership! Lol. If they give me some bullsh*t ill do a step by step write up.

 

I replaced the charcoal canister and the filter for good measure. Light came back on about a week later. Replaced gas cap and 3 hoses from fuel filler neck, light came back on about a week later. I'm beyond frustrated. I'm trying to sell my truck and dont want a buyer to freak out about engine light.

 

Yesterday I pulled the charcoal canister out of my truck. You do not need to drop the tank nor lift the bed. All a d all would have taken me a hour tot to do the job. The vac pump was filled with liquid, gas that probably made its way thru the canister from when I overfilled it. I cleaned it all out with brake parts cleaner, the non chlorine type let it dry and put it all bak together. I guess we will see what happens.
On another note I can do a step by step removal and install on this if u guys like. It dosnt require any special tools. Just a 1/4" drive ratchet, 6" extension, 10mm socket and a 12mm socket. A 2x4 or somthing similar 12" long, and a 4x4 24" long or somthing similar. And last the jack from our truck.

Did that seem to work? i'm going to try that first beofre forking out the cash for a new canisher.

 

I didn't work for me, I got new canister and filter. I bench tested the vsv and canister and both passed. Having gas pulled thru that pump must destroy it. I changed the parts 2 weeks ago. All good now. The process is simple took about 20 min on my '11 access cab

 

I took it all apart and blew out the piece mounted on the canister, and a lot of rust looking fluid came out. Also my filter was packed with sand from the dunes, and had a crack so I bought a new one.

While I had the bed off I extended the 2 gas line to fit my fiberglass fenders.

No codes yet, but if so looks like I'll be replacing the whole canister.

 

Anthony, your truck was still under warranty, wasn't this covered? I got the same codes yesterday on my '12 dbl cab w/32k miles. Figured I'd have the dealer do it.

 

So I have a similar concern, but I'm not sure if I should be concerned or not.

I purchased an UltraGauge (UG) through one of the Group Buys on here.

About 4 days ago, my UG sounded an alarm and said "Pending Error Codes." I'm not really sure what that means. I checked the codes and wrote them down before clearing them. They were these exact codes. My CEL never came on.

Did anyone ever determine the exact cause and solution?

Should I be concerned?

 

Most likely you have encountered the same problem as the rest if us, overfilling the gas tank and flooding the charcoal canister. When my CEL was on I didn't notice a mpg drop or any adverse reaction but overall its an easy one to fix. I checked and tested the while evap system with standard non special tools and can give ya guys a walk thru if ya would like. Luckily the 4.0 v6 in our trucks has one of the simplest evap systems I have seen in a while.

 

Got the codes. So reading the above ill have to replace the canister pump and filter, there's no cleaning or fixing it?

I di have a problem with the gas cap that was setting off different codes a month ago cause bd lift but moved the lines and was fine. Possible problem with fuel lines or cap? I'm getting really shitty mpg the past couple weeks too.

 

The pump is part of the canister and the filter is easily replaced, I did both when the problem arose on my truck. I tried everything I could think of to fix it, less of cutting the canister open. When I took mine apart gas poured out if the pump so there was no saving that lol. Like I said earlier, the system on these trucks are simple, you have the vent tube off the gas tank to the canister, hose off canister to filter, hose from filter to gas cap vent, filler hose and hose/ tube from canister to vsv on intake manifold and the little vacuum line between vsv and manifold. (I'm sorry is I left somthing out or if my order isn't correct it's been a while.). I blew low pressure air thru each like to make sure they were clear, then plugged each one and tested pressure and vacuum for a couple minuets. I didn't need to drop gas tank nor remove bed of truck.
