I'm in Florida where it's almost flat and I spend more than 1/2 my time on highway. Never see anywhere near 20mpg's

I must be doing it wrong.

Against conventional wisdom, higher altitude can mean better mpg. Thinner air means lower air resistance, and thinner air means less power which requires less fuel.

I averaged 17.4 or so on a 1700 mile round trip with a dirtbike in the back which was on the Interstate at 75mph and up to 80 for passing. When I took side roads out when I came home and had a few stretches at 60-65mph for about 150 miles and got 20.2mpg that tank.

    6spd w/stock SR5 stuff.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
If you have done the math correctly, ethanol free gas is the key. I could have pushed 21+ in my 4wd with ethanol free a few times. Unfortunately it is $.50 more per gallon, and not worth it imo.

Yeah, math is correct. I get significantly lower mpg when I don't run it, however it is cheaper according to this: http://www.roadtripamerica.com/fuel-cost-calculator.php not even considering the damage that ethanol does to your engine over time.

Topic was discussed here in a older thread http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/217978-ethanol-free-gas-2-weeks.html

Luckily the price difference here isn't as drastic, last fill up I believe it was only a twenty nine cent difference

Running regular gas I was getting closer to 17mpg around town and 20mpg was the best highway pull I was able to manage usually right around 19

I can't justify the price. Ours is 91 octane too, so they get you on that also. I have faithfully started running it in all my tools and toys though.

    19.1 MPG in summer. :woot:
    16.2 MPG in winter. :censored:

Combined, roughly 60% highway and 40% city.

I've read the last couple pages of this thread and haven't noticed anyone mention speedometer correction when calculating fuel mileage. If someone already did I'm going to reiterate.

For anyone running over or undersized wheels/tires, remember unless you've had your speedos corrected either by calibration or with a module it is wrong, and that affects your odometer, and your odometer affects your fuel mileage calculations.

Under sized tires or wheels have to turn more rotations to get you the same distance and will give you an overly rosey reading on mpg. Oversized tires travel farther with each rotation and will give you an incorrectly low reading. There are correction multipliers you can use if you know your original tire size and new size.

My mostly stock Prerunner Tacoma with stock tire outside diameter and mostly highway driving 65-75 mph with a little bit of city driving gets 18.5-19.2 mpg reliably. If I idle a lot or push it it drops to no less than 17. I currently have 180,000k miles on her.

Pulling trailers it drops like a stone. 400 miles pulling a 6x12 enclosed uhaul trailer netted 11.2 mpg, and I average about the same pulling a pontoon boat or my company's Bobcat on a tandem axle trailer.
