    You need to get out more or wheel with me more ;) I guess it could also come down to what you define as useful.


    When I was flexing out my rig in this pic, I could not get up far enough without the front locker. Once that front tire lifted up, my rear just spun and slid down the hill... Could I have got some speed and got up it sure, and I tried hitting it will a little speed and still didn't get up it and decided the speed I would need to get up it was going to make it a pretty hard hit that I just didn't want to do, so I locked the front locker and just crept up it like I had all 4 tires on pavement.

    Obviously that doesn't make it $900 useful, and there are lots of things, like in Moab, that you can over come the lack of a locker with speed, but I am not fond of ramming steep rocks and such and the front locker is great because it allows me to just creep up them nice and gently. It's also great for snow and mud.

    Like this big crack for example, not exactly something you want to hit with some speed, although this isn't a great example because I didn't need the front locker to get through it by any means. haha

    No, the rock is just really solid and a fairly even surface so tires grip it just like they do pavement basically.

    The wheeling I typically do in the lava rocks in my pics above, when I start climbing up something all the little rocks start rolling under my tires and I end up spinning more. Same with being on a gravel or didn't road, the dirt moves out from under your tires so you spin more. A big solid rock isn't going to slide out from under your tires so you have much better grip!

    Cool, good to know. I have never been to Moab before.

    So if you get a locker in the front do you need to change to a solid axle or can you keep the setup you have? I always thought it was a locker up there cause of the 4x4. I guess I have a lot to learn.

    You can have a locker in your iFS. You don't need a solid front axle in the front to have a locker.

    You can stay IFS. The TRD Offroad's come with a locker in the rear and I have added a locker to the front since. You basically just swap out the spider gear carrier for the locker.

    One note to this video, is our Tacomas have part time 4wd, so there is no center locker, basically it is always locked when you are in 4wd.

    There is only 1 other front locker option for a 2nd gen besides ARB and it costs twice what an ARB does because it comes from Australia. Haha
