Neat. I bet that smooths the ride out considerably.

Yeah, a local logger brings me a cherry picker load at a time. It usually works out to about 8 cord. I cut and split it all to size, then sell three cord and keep the rest. My firewood's been Labor only for two years now; the three that I sell even pays for my chainsaw gas. :D

what does "cherry picker load" mean? Too small for his ideal size?

yeah, it's worked out pretty good so far.

Sorry, local slang. It's a logging truck with an integrated crane and grapnel for loading/offloading logs. We call them Cherry Pickers around here, even though it's a gross mislabel.

Y'all are making me nostalgic for the house we had in Ithaca growing up. First thing my mother did when we got the house is go out and buy a beautiful wood cookstove for the back room. (The house had a small addition off the kitchen that we used as a foyer... only guests got to use the front door)

Sucker would keep that room near 80, which was an amazing thing to walk into after a few hours of sledding. Couple that with the inset we had in the living room and we never once touched the thermostat. I was in the best shape of my life too, my parents figured with three boys, no need to buy gas for a chainsaw... they just made sure the axe was nice and sharp. :D

Since OZ trolls this thread pretty heavily, I'll throw in a huge +1 for some of his advice he posted somewhere a while back. I got pine sap all over my hands and remembered his saying butter takes the sap right off and, sure enough, worked like a charm! I got a few weird looks from my wife but it got the sap off so I didn't care.

Veggie oil works too. We were scrubbing pines out this spring. Should've seen the look my gf gave me when she saw the bottle of veggie oil in the shower.
I couldn't tell if it was arousal or alarm!

    It definitely "softens" the ride!:D

Actually the wood looks yellow, but it is Black Locust. It's the best, hottest burning wood around here as far as I'm concerned! Ash would be the next best thing! All this was cut and split over the summer! Still no creosote!

Until you brought it up, I'd never heard of Madrone before! I don't know if it's even available around here! Ash, Maple, Cherry, Apple, Oak (white/red), are all good around here, but the Locust is the best! It burns hot, long, and leaves behind fluffy white ash! And...it burns great even freshly cut!

Locust will also grow fast! Stick a branch in the ground and you will have fence posts in 3 years and firewood in 5!

I have a great respect for your wood knowledge, dimensional and burnable! I am jealous of your woodworking! I have a hammer and can nail boards together, but I'm no carpenter! I also have a chainsaw and axe, that just makes me scary! :)

Madrone only grows within a couple miles of the ocean from Oregon to BC

Madrone may be the best, but for anybody who doesn't live on the coast in BC it may as well be unobtanium. Around here it's Locust for fast growth, or Oak and Maple for long hot burns. I've never been a fan of Ash, it seems like it converts to its namesake almost immediately in every stove I've ever used. As soon as you put it in, there's a puff of smoke, a burst of heat, and a pile of gray lumps. Maybe I'm seasoning it too long? I've heard that you can burn it green, but that makes ME green just thinking about it. But I typically burn wood that's been cut split and stacked for at least a year... Maybe too long for Ash?
I love burning Apple and Black Cherry, but they're hard to find and expensive as hell when you do. Since I buy tree length, anytime I get a log of Cherrywood it gets set aside for either being turned on the lathe or burned in the firepit (Cherry smells absolutely awesome burned where you can smell the smoke)
