DIY COLD AIR INTAKE

if you're set on an aftermarket style instake (more than just a drop-in), homemade is the way to go if you have the tools.

I built mine a little over a year ago. used some clamp together pieces for the tube, a universal oilless cone filter, and welded up my own box with a tube taking air from the factory spot in the fender. It's not pictured, but i did build a top to seal off the box, but i rarely have it on. when i monitor my intake temperature, an open vs closed style box does not vary the intake temp. whoda thunk?

no gain or loss in the mileage or performance areas (as we all know and expect). i think it just sounds fun

 

Yeah, got that. URD MAF calibrator, software & a wbo2 sensor gauge.............Did read shit. Volant was only thing beyond drop-in in oem box to do anything at all was what I found. Certainly hasn't lost any power at all before any tuning has happened. Face palm all you want. Do it til it leaves a welp then you can look like Manning with his helment off. The ram air is a test too. I prefer just the fender well opening for aesthetics and a cleaner filter but am giving it a shot. I have realistic goals of simply dialing in AFRs and flowing a bit more air with a reuesable dry filter, maybe a bit more power and mpg maybe not. Who cares, my toys to tinker with. It is a fucking 4 cylinder so quarter mile records aren't any kind of thought so your scoffing is wasted douchery but troll on.

 

OP I am very familiar with modifying diesel motors and yes CAIs do make a huge HP gain on diesel motors usually around 50-100 hp. Unfortunately gasoline engines do not benefit from CAIs like diesels do. The hp increase will be negligible if any. Most likely the only thing that will change is you might be able to hear your intake a little better. I don't want to poop on your pancakes, if you want to do it I say go for it just don't hold your breath expecting to the same gains you experienced on your Powerstrokes.

 

yea i wasnt expecting any kind of gains like that on my yota, just wanted a cool 1-off with a nice sound, maybe a little help in the hp range, but no expectations just 1-off and say, I DIDNT BUY THAT! I MADE IT! LOL

i had 26 bucks in this just 2 flexible 90* p trap type plumbin fittings and a cowl induction filter from ebay. i used a solderin iron to make a hole for the MAF and the PCV and fuel rail vacuum lines. it was only 3 in fittings and the stock intake area around the MAF is close to 4 so it thought it was getting more air than it was and would run a little rich (about 600 miles before the CEL came on so not too rich i suppose) i went back to stock now. there was a thread on here about closing off the air resonator with sheet aluminum that i may do, and i want to try my hand at making a high flow washable drop in filter out of screen door wire and gauze and fit it paper filter (paper removed) eventually.

Don't forget that the stock paper filters dirt better than the high flow k & n type.

 

OP, don't take it personal. On every board there are supporters, haters, and those in between. Personally, if I am attempting something new, I'll try it first, then post. Seems to cut some noise.

...also tried an aFe Stage II SI, stock with aFe drop-in, and an URD+MAF Cali. URD setup is what I have now and is probably what I will stay with.

Not wierd, looks like my pics were removed. Not sure what I did with them now. Basically what I did was found a used Volant AirRam and plumbed it into the stock intake box (the one on top of the engine) with a couple of silicone couplers, an elbow and a chunk of aluminum pipe.

here is my cold air intake. It was built more to keep water out of the intake (not having to use a snorkel) and dust/rocks form entering the intake in teh fenderwell since I have glass fenders its completely exposed. People always laugh and say its a true cold air intake cause when you have the AC on it cool air form the cab (i guess in the winter time is means warm )







a guy in socal here on the forum contacted me for a parts list - he posted a video of the sound in the cab. Its no worse than a cone filter under your hood. You hear it growl under hard acceleration but unnoticeable when cruising:

The point was to keep water out of the intake and not having to install a Snorkel.

 

Bingo! was expecting or wanting any performance enhancements - purely for water, dirt and debris.

Why not just leave the OE intake tube as is then, and do your mod with the red ducting from the fender elbow on, leaving the engine bay stock...if what you wanted is an internal snorkel type device..

Seems like removing the stock "intake tube(between fender and airbox)" is your version of an Intake Flow Accelerator mod or Intake Silencer Removal mod.(which is what I'm looking to do)

I would be worried the red ducting might be too flimsy. So im considering a hard plastic tube
