Actually, it had a lot to do with the steel itself. Toyota specified frame materials that were less corrosion-resistant (and thus less expensive) despite recommendations from Dana (if I recall correctly) that the steel wouldn't hold up to corrosion over time. The solution was to undercoat the frames at the factory, but the undercoat was a type that was easily scraped/blasted off by sand/road debris over time. The exposed steel then corroded rapidly due to its lower quality.

Nah, just throw some threadlock on there and jam it back in. You'll be good for at least another 20k or 20 feet...whichever comes first! :D

Yeah, he was a really great guy to do business with.

Aside from all of the mud, the frame looked great. Truck spent 3 years in RI, it's been in Kodiak, AK and now it's in WA. Think I got it away from the East Coast just in time..

Yeah, they had a 2006 - looked absolutely horrible. Definitely wasn't a "possible" the only thing left for them to pull off the old frame was the front diff. Literally had holes in the frame behind the cats. Harvey said that's where most of the rust issues on the 2nd gens originates from.

A slew of pricey stuff my wife hates me for.
IRA in Epping already has a few being done simultaneously.
Not so much. If that were the case this particular problem would be pervasive across several makes and models since the inception of road salt. Nobody ever treated frames with anything other than paint. Processing steel, especially with recycled content, is a very tricky and specific process to achieve a good finished product. Toyota has been using the same supplier for the entirety of Tacoma production, and the results speak for themselves.

This helped the rust take hold and exploit imperfections in the steel.

    This.

Shit. Basement is flooded. Not horrible and luckily nothing valuable got wet. I have a few options here...
Bust out the shop vac and spend the next hour hauling water out
Get a pump, buy one, borrow one or call the landlord and make them figure it out
Or say fuck it and buy some ice skates, my basement would be a skating rink by tomorrow lol

Do like we did when my parents house flooded. Get a big garbage can full of water then started a syphon out of it. For the syphon we just used a hose filled with water, used spray handle on one end to cap it off put the other end in the garbage can and ran the hose straight outside then took the spray handle off to let it flow. Use the shop vac to suck up water and only need to lift it high enough to pour into to garbage can. We removed 3-4 inches of water in about an hour this way. Worked like a charm.
