So as it goes, I ended up getting my '89 Chevy K1500 back from the guy I sold it to. He snapping the frame when he overloaded it and drove it across a washout in his field. Before I sold it to him, I droped in a rebuilt 350 TBI into it. The motor has got less than 6,000 miles on it since the rebuild, so I was wondering if anyone had done an 350 engine swap on a 2nd gen Tacoma? My truck is a 2011 Reg Cab 4x4 with the 2.7. First off Is it even possible? It'll be a ways down the road before I even start the project because right now my Tacoma is my daily driver. I am in the process of taking the engine out of the Chevy right now. Any input?

I've rebuilt several Engines before just never done a swap like this.

Anything like that is possible. The issue is, is it practical, and do you have the money? It would be cheaper to install a turbo.

Ive seen one with a 5.7 LS1 in it, but I think it was a prerunner. Not sure if the 4x4 stuff will be in the way.

There are many Tacomas with 350, ls, 2nd swaps on youtube. Most guys running sbc and want to keep the 4x4 use turbo 350 trans. Only thing you have to worry about is all the electrical bs that is on the tacoma now.

Not only do you have to work about the mods required to fit it, but a lot of States will not pass a vehicle with an engine from an older model year, if you're subject to inspections. Plus, in a lot of cases, the emissions system must be unmolested in any way, shape, or form.

Not sure about your area, but just something to think about.

What are your goals with the truck? I have a 92 chevy with the TBI v6 and while it is a decent motor I wouldn't want to go backwards in technology with my engine in the Toyota. I know that the TBI v6 is a popular swap for older toyotas, but I wouldn't swap in a 350 in a Tacoma as new as yours. If you want more power what about a supercharger or a custom turbo kit. Either would be easier and still very satisfying I think. Just my opinion. Good luck to whatever you decide.

I thought about a supercharger, but just curious do you know the hp gain? The only reason I was thinking about the 350 was because I had the rebuilt one sitting in the shop collecting dust.

Not a problem in my area, rural Colorado. A buddy of mine that lives in the city limits said the same thing. The truck the 350 came out of had duel strait pipes with 3" manifold dumps. Thank god their pretty lenient about that stuff round here.

The electrical is exactly what I was worried about, but I was talking to a drinking budy of mine yesterday. He dropped a 383 stroker into his 1st gen and has done a few engine swaps on other tacomas, never on anything newer then a 98 tacoma. Anyways, he offered to help so I think I'm gonna take him up on his offer when I finally get around to doing it, if I do it, ha. We'll see what happens.

Here's some pics of his truck, the bottom three are kind of crappy res.

Thanks guys for all the input. I'm definitely not going to do the swap while the truck's my daily driver.

I know everyone has their own opinions about Chevy engine placements in Tacoma's . I'm considering putting a 282 Chevy Stock SB in my 2002 Toy 4x4 standard cab Auto tranny ' The truck has a 2.7 in it now ' the engine has rattled and knocked sense the day I bought it . it has finely hit a nerve . I have decided to swap out the engine I would like some input on the install if any one has already completed their project truck . Your project experience would be greatly appreciated
    thanks Fellows .

There are two things that make big engines fit in vehicles that weren't designed for - money and magic.

It's possible, it's just how much fabrication work it's going to take and how much wiring / re-wiring it's going to take to make everything play nicely together.

This thread is old and the resurrector with a 2002 would probably be better off posting his 282 swap question in the gen 1 forum.

While the TBI might not always have been the most enlightened intakes, I'm not entirely sure you can say that a Chevy 350 is 'shit'.

... damn it, I quoted an old as shit post. Damn zombie threads.
