Just got back from a couple weeks home in TN. Only made it to the woods 4 times and didnt see the first deer. Only one has been killed all season on our family property, been a weird season for sure. Nothing moving hardly.

I guess I've got the worst luck this year. Haven't got to hunt much due to work. And today I decided to call out of work to get a little huntin in. Well at 5 o'clock a nice 8 comes out to my right which is a very awkward shot for a right handed shooter in a climber. Well I had one open shot between some trees. I waited till he got there and pulled the trigger. Immediately he jumps and kicks out his back legs which Is always a good sign of a hit. When I got down there was a hell of a blood trail. Well it went on and on and on and on... I tracked that buck for like a half a mile of good blood to only come to a dead stop in blood and not another trace of the deer. I've never had a blood trail like that and not find a deer 50 yards later dead.

I've tracked several (Mine and friend's) where the blood trail stops. You've just gotta get on your hands and knees and look all over the place for another sign. Whether it's on a tree, or messed up leaves where he ran, just anything. Don't give up on him, especially if he's a nice deer. Go back after him tomorrow. Get some friends to help.

and a dog. but seriously, the amount of deer ive found with little to no blood is crazy. ive seen a heart shot doe run over 100 yards without a drop of blood until the last 10 yards. once they get that adrenaline goin they keep goin. if its good blood for that far im willing to bet some fat plugged the hole or you gut shot him, since he horse kicked, in which case hes probably stiff somewhere within 100 yards of where last blood is. been trailing deer for many years, everybody else in my family sees hair and shoots. they suck at kill shots. check water or thick blowdowns if any are nearby. but seriously take a dog. they can do wonders

All of this. They'll almost always run to water or thick cover to die. My 6 point I killed this year fell and leaves covered the bullet hole. My blood trail ended, so my dad and I just started spreading out looking. Sure enough, about 50 yards from the last spot of blood, there he was just before a big thick ivy. I've never used a dog. My dogs aren't smart enough for that

So after fiddling around with the taco in the garage this afternoon I walk back to the house and notice there is a monster ten point napping under an apple tree in the back lot. I glassed him and played around a bit with the call and got him in closer for a better look. Alls I gotta say is that he's a wall mounter for sure.

Meant to post this the other day, but after all season of not seeing a shooter buck i decided to take this doe on the second to last day of the season just to get some meat in the freezer. I was on the ground in a little cover i made that morning and she got spooked so i shot her on the run. Heart shot but she still went about 100 yards. Had to let her stay over night and found her in the morning

This weekend is the final two days of our late season anterless hunt. I have 3 tags remaining. I've been fighting the flu for a week and haven't gotten out much. Tomorrow is going to be cold. They are calling for -14 at sunrise and a high of -3. Hope to tag out early.

My second deer ever, killed him yesterday on the Buckhorn WMA in Louisiana. Shot with a break action single shot .35 whelen which is a legal weapon in Louisiana during primitive weapons season.

This joker walked right up on me (scared the crap out of me lol). I was in a ground blind that was made of palmettos leaned agains saw horses with a chair between them. I was checking my phone and getting ready to walk out (had to drive a 5ish hours that night). Looked up and he is standing 15 ft to my left. He heard the hammer on my gun cock and ran to about 20 yards and gave me a pretty broad side.

200 grain fusion soft point, I like my uncles whelen a lot more than my cousins 45-70, I need a whelen now. I'm thinking about looking for a TC encore from for cheap (ish). The .35 whelen is an awesome cartridge from my short experience with it.

I heard him crash about 100 yards away, he crashed in palmettos, whiich sounded a lot like a splash in water, I was really hoping it wasn't in water, thankfully he was high and dry.

Now I'm considering a new gun specifically for primitive season in Louisiana, would appreciate some advice on finding a gun that fits the regulations, I know I can get a contender or encore or similar, but I'd like to find something else that would be different

Here are the regs for centerfire

    2. Single shot, breech loading rifles, .35 caliber or larger having an exposed hammer that uses metallic cartridges loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. All of the above may be fitted with magnified scopes.

I'm wondering if there are any falling blocks with hammers that I can chamber in .35 whelen

I've got a TC Encore. Got it used (1 season) for like $125. I love it. Our primitive weapon season here is only a week (the week between bow season and rifle season), so I don't get to use it much, but I've put 2 deer down with it in the 3 years I've had it.

You got an encore for 125? Where the heck did you find one for that price?
