Car part furniture?

So, I've been bored during this winter break and I've been wanting to turn old car parts into different things. I took a distributor from an '89 Mustang 5-0, BMW cam sprocket and a crank pulley from a GM and made a lamp. Should have it wired tomorrow, but this is what I came up with.



Thinking I need to raise the lamp shade to expose the top of the cap better.

Anybody else do something like this?

 

Also, if this is in the wrong place, I apologize. I'm new and mostly lost in the sauce.

 

There was a thread/picture where someone had put a glass top on a engine block to make a table. Pretty cool stuff ya ask me.

 

Neat! One day I plan to make stuff like this. I don't need it right now though.

My friends all seem to think I should make a couple more and sell them. Idk.

So, went to a different salvage yard and it had a much better selection of junk. Got two more distributors, some more pulleys and a couple gears to make two more lamps. I plan on selling these two.

And here is the progress on the Cherokee lamp. Just figuring out how I want it. Will break it down tomorrow to clean and paint the parts.


The long threaded rod is how it is all held together and it is hollow inside for the power cord to run through. I'll cut it down once I'm happy with how it is all put together.

 

Here's some stuff I made some years ago. Haven't made much more because people aren't willing to pay whats actually into it (sandblasting and powdercoating can get pricey quick). I'll have my own place soon where I can do this stuff on my own, but the economy is crap now.

That's why I don't think it would be worth making these to sell. People love them, just not their price tags. If I can sell these two easily enough, I might make a couple more. If not, then I'll just make them at cost for some friends because they're kind of fun to make.

I really like that connecting rod lamp btw.

No progress today. Felt like shit this morning and then went shooting with a friend in the evening.

OP, Nice Job. I have a lamp my dad got made out of a 454 carb. I will get some pictures of it later and post them.

 

I love seeing this kind of stuff! When someone takes something and repurposes it. Anything really. I haven't done car parts, but I've made a coffee table out of pallets.

 

Not a whole lot done today. I spent the majority of the day cleaning the garage and organizing my work space....I'm in desperate need of more space. Haha (aren't we all?)

Forgot to grab a new adapter piece for the distributor on the right. Need to clean them up more and then paint the pulleys. The pulley on the left had a serious amount of surface rust. Wire-wheeled it done to mostly shiney metal though.

Next time I'm at the salvage yard I'll ask how much an engine block costs. I've been wanting one of those too.

You need to start this thread on the "garage journal forum ", those guys would love it and I bet many would have some nice stuff to contribute.

 

I started by being bored and broke. Had some stuff laying around from a project. Later it got where i would prep the stuff (remove bolts, bushings, clean them) and i would get inspired one day and build something. A tip: name brand dealers often have a recall that involves changing multiples if the same part. They ll often let you take the leftovers. This also gives you multiples for consistancy and larger projects.

Some interesting tidbits on my work: I helped the guy that bought the blue chair carry it to his car. Ironicly he drove the same type of car many of the parts came from. And one of the tattoo arm rests I sold on ebay went to a guy in Luxembourg. Took FOREVER to get through customs.
