I hear so much talk about wanting to convert the 2nd gen Tacoma into a diesel. Well guess what, as I mentioned, the HiLux, which is just a renamed European version of the Tacoma, HAS a diesel option. Want one? Here you go. ECU included!

    Tacoma Diesel Engine!

    Another one!!!!

The Hilux is not just a rebadged Tacoma. They are different platforms.

I won't blatantly disagreee with oyu on this, but perhaps you could show something to prove that? All of my information says that they are the same. Heck, they even LOOK the same in photos, and a cursory check shows that they share identical part numbers. That makes me feel I am correct in my statement.

Although they do share a lot of parts, they are indeed different. The Taco is based on the 120 series chassis used in the Prado and 4 Runner. The Hilux and Fortuner share a different chassis.

According to what I have found though. the suspension system is identical (aftermarket parts suppliers show this) and the frame configuration are the same. This means that the engine will still fit. I just thought it would be interesting.

The engine that dieseltoys in San Antonio uses for their swaps is the 1KD-FTV which puts out 170hp and 260ftlbs. Our engines put out 236hp and 266ftlbs. The difference is that the 260ftlbs the diesel puts out is achieved at 1800rpm, not 4000rpm.

If and when the engine in Smokey dies she'll be headed to San Antonio for the swap.

The other nice thing about the diesel is the abundant power that's left untapped by the factory. Pull off the cats and muffler and you'll gain a nice jump in power. Also turning up the boost on an already boosted engine is much easier than trying to boost a naturally aspirated one. I can almost guarantee that 200hp and 400ftlbs can be had out of that engine for the cost of some exhaust pipe and a tune.

lol, you could get a dedicated tow rig(diesel) for that price and still have some mod money left.. I dont really see the point in paying 25K for a diesel conversion.

So you're going to take a rolling chassis with potentially 200k miles on it and dump over $20k to put a new engine in it??? You could buy a brand new replacement engine with a URD stage 3 kit for less including labor to install and still have enough left over to replace all the parts that will need replacing by then.

Yup, that's what I would do. It's not the most financially responsible thing to do, but so what.

I had methanol injection running on my Golf TDI.

First off, I was not saying that it would cost less or anything else. I was simply showing that there IS a viable option for those willing to look at it. Just thought it was interesting at the least. I am sure the company in SA does good work, but I know you can take an engine like I have shown and get a Tacoma converted for a HELL of a lot less thank $25K.

My point being that there is enough of a similarity that according to my research, this engine would bolt right in. Now yes, there are some wiring issues that would have to be resolved, but the engine itself would fit, bolt up to the transmission in said Tacoma, and be 90% ready to drive.

There is not a very big difference between them if you simply do a Google search. They are quite identical in many aspects, mainly the frame, and suspension, along with the powertrain locations.

Isn't the Tacoma based on the Prado and not the Hilux ?
