Thanks for all the tips! This is definitely very helpful. I've heard something about the salt on the roads and it gets up in the undercarriage and creates rust? Is this a big time truth, or are there ways around that?
And yes, I have just the stock tires (Bridgestone dueler h/t)

You won't see much snow in Ft. Knox.

My truck has only seen a few inches of snow at a time until last weekend. We had about a foot so I've a chance to brush up on my skills. The stock Rugged Trails haven't done too bad but I'm sure Duratracs would bite into the snow a lot better. I'll probably get a set at around 30K miles next year some time.

This weekend shouldn't be bad at all. I just checked the forecast for Elizabethton which is just south of Fort Knox and the highs are in the low 50's this weekend. Any snow should be long gone.

I've seen plenty there already in late November, just didn't have a vehicle yet.

LOL, well, you probably saw all the snow you will see for a while. It happens once or twice a year but that is about it. And when it snows, it generally melts in a day or 2 if it sticks at all. But there was that time in 1993, and in 1978.....

What everyone said, drive slow, react slow...last year I was coming back from California, hit a late season storm before Memphis, when I got to Virginia it was snowing pretty dang good, many a four wheel drive came sailing past me as if they owned the road....I only have a two wheel drive with AT's, wouldn't ya know it, as I progressed down the road with my safety flashers on, several of the '4 wheel drive' idiots were in ditches, I personally witnessed one that passed me prolly doing 50+ and saw the spin and dive into the ditch, their right front tire hit the built up snow berm between lanes when they went to change lanes, 4 wheel drive will not save you if you are an idiot...I made it home fine, although, my arse puckered more than once from the experience...

Slow and easy, flashers for safety, you will survive...

Snow tires in Kentucky are not a good investment.

I can see the logic there. I'd want an all season AT with snow rating. FWIW.

Great info on the posts here. Drive defensively, slow down, don't be over confident with 4wd, and practice your sliding in an empty parking lot before the real shit. Also, for a tire that looks good and performs great on- and off-road AND is snowflake rated, I would suggest GoodYear DuraTracs. Great in the mud and snow if you don't mind a little hum. They have performed for me in our Wisconsin winter and my muddy hunting trips. Good luck in keeping it between the lines! http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Wrangler+DuraTrac&partnum=675QR6WDTOWL

Throw it in 4WD. Blast it through the snow. Have fun. Lol. There is no need to worry about snow in these beasts because they are straight TANKS. Haha.

31W sucks to drive. If you live on post hen it's not that bad. However, if you drive to Louisville on the weekends, etc. then it can be a little tricky depending on weather. Honestly though, that area doesn't get a lot of snow from the last three years I've been stationed there.

Sure they'll help, but an inexperienced (or experienced for that matter) driver can be out of control just as fast with snow tires as they can with all seasons... I have lived in the north my entire life and could get through a winter with damn near bald tires if I absolutely had to. In regards to snow driving, experience is worth A LOT. I have to recommend that the OP takes it slow on his way up the and do a good amount of practicing in the stuff when he arrives. I'd much rather swear at someone for going too slow when the weather deteriorates than be involved with whatever comes with them driving too fast and losing control.
