Did a search and have found some feedback on the URD short shift kit along with the TRD shift kit but all were related to the 6 speed not the 5 speed 2.7L.

Wondering if any of you that have the URD short shift kit could provide some feedback? Any issues with getting into reverse like those that that have the 6 speed?

    Lots.
Your going to find your answers on XR-underground.com. That is where the X-Runners are at and they have most of the performance mods.

so I should re-read all the 6 speed short shifter reviews again?

What about a 5 speed short shifter review?

Oh sorry dude. I answered too quick and didn't read well enough. Yea I'm no help on the 5 speed reviews. Call up gadget. He won't give you bad info. He is in it for the customer not the sale.

I've got the URD on my 5 speed. I must say, I love the URD. I have had very few problems with shifting after installing it. First off, the shifts are much shorter (obviously). Second, the shifts are much more positive (tighter), which I like.

I have had a few issues with shifting into reverse. This only seems to be a problem in the following scenario. Clutch out to start the truck, start truck, try to move shifter to reverse. I find that it can be difficult to shift into reverse like that. It is much easier and feels like normal if I let the clutch in and then back out and then shift into reverse. To me that's not a big deal.

That's the only shifting issue I have had. The other issue I had was with the installation. It is probably better explained in this thread.

Overall, I would do it again. The feel of the shifter is greatly improved over stock. Although I don't notice it very much now, it made a huge difference after installation.

BTW, Gadget and URD are top notch with customer service. When I found the spacers didn't fit right, he offered me a refund. I, of course, decided to make it work anyway. I wouldn't hesitate to buy stuff from them again.

Does TRD even offer a kit for the 5-speed? If so, what's the part #? I can't find it.

I love mine. Shifting was a bit tight at first but once it broke in, it's way better than before. The installation was really easy, I definitely recommend this!

A guy i know has the URD short shift kit in his 6speed and the shifts are smooth and short but going into reverse is a lot tougher than stock.

    hope that helps

Infact, I did see a part number for a 5-speed TRD short throw when I was looking up the number for my 6-speed at work one day (I work at a dealer, I know, shame on me). I'll get with one of my parts guys tomorrow and see if I can dig up the part number, but I remember it being the exact same price as the 6-speed short throw (expensive).

Comparatively, I drove a truck with a URD short throw and decided to put the TRD in my truck. I just thought it felt better, and since the TRD is a whole new shift lever, it didn't get any taller. No problems shifting into any gears (had it for nearly 5,000 miles) as of yet.

So, strangely enough, my parts guys remember their being a part number for the 5-speed transmission, but we couldn't find it today. I'll keep digging.

    it's because they don't exist....

URD and LCE short shifters are the only two available for the R155...I've heard good things about both of them, I chose the URD solely on price (was $99 when i purchaced mine.)

the URD SS really helped, gear changes are much easier, although it takes a little more effort than stock, but not enough for it to be very noticeable. I also have the problem with getting into reverse once in awhile, but it did when i didn't have the short shifter. The 1st to 2nd "jog" is still there, but it is noticeably less and much easier to shift into second smoothly. Overall, especially for the price, it's worth it.

The install itself does require you to go underneath the truck, so plan accordingly. I had to jack mine up to reach the bolts holding the shifter plate (the 5 speed has 6 bolts, compared to the 6 speeds 4, and the hole from the top is much smaller) i have some install tips and pics in my build thread. somewhere....lol

I must have seen a part number for something related to the short throw for my 6 speed when I thought it was for a 5 speed. A couple tech's (one of which has a 4x4 Reg Cab 5 speed) said TRD just released it, but I'm not sure I buy that after all the searching I've done with no luck.

My mistake, sorry to mislead. I will keep an eye out in case one appears, though.

Finally got the SS installed today after having to send the one I received first because GF ordered the one for the V6...go figure:rolleyes:

First off the install is really self explanatory. But it took me about an hour to get the left front bolt knocked loose. Just be prepared for a super tight fit under there but its doable. Once I got everything installed I took her for a test drive. And wow  I feel like I'm driving a race car. The shift is so short compared to stock. I was actually blown away. Each shift felt tighter and positive. I had zero problems shifting into reverse. Guess im lucky

Overall great product from URD and I highly recommend.

as the OP of this thread I'll report. Purchased the Short throw shifter shortly after starting this thread and have had it installed since. I would not think about returning to the stock shifting mechanism. This kit shortens the throw and provides more notchiness to the pattern. Have not had any issues with accessing any or all of the gears. This was a definate plus to the trucks driveability and IMO improves the overall shifting experience.

Locktite is needed, took me about an hour to get mine installed. I will never go back to stock shifting.
