So much misinformation in this thread. Why people choose to argue there is no bind in 4x4, when Toyota themselves has explained that it happens in the manual, is beyond me. No, all the tires don't have to spin the same speed, but the averaged speed of the front tires will always equal the averaged speed of the rear tires(ie front and rear pinions are spinning the same speed always), unless, like I've said before, there is a center diff between the 2 drive shafts.

    Your kidding right?
Sounds like you've never actually made sharp turns on dry pavement with your part-time 4WD engaged. Believe me, your going to bind up and quite possibly break something. Read the links below for more information...

Not going to argue. If you don't want to use it don't. How many front ends have you replaced because of this? Ask your local Toyota master tech how many he has even heard of. I Know Savannah's master tech Mike, just grinned and shook his head when I asked him. I do not hesitate to use it.

Well the instructions provided earlier do not say to "not" use 4x4 on dry pavement. It states that it "can" bind on dry pavement.

Pretty sure he is saying it won't break just using it on dry pavement.

So if won't break what's the problem? If you know how your truck acts and feels when it starts to bind back off a hair and adjust your steering.

No one here is suggesting put it in 4 hi and forget about it. What's being "discussed (lol)" is that touching dry pavement in 4 wheel drive is going grenade the truck. As it was plainly put above it won't.

no it won't but why even do it? If OP wants to put 4x4 and leave it on 4x4 for his daily commute or whatever than good for him. I'm not going to do it.

No one is suggesting that he or I or even you should do it so why are so hung up on that one scenario that no one is even discussing. Except for you?

I don't see why people can't just be sensible about the whole deal. There is no 100% one way or the other. We all know what happens to metals under stress, they either bend or break. It is 100% true that 4x4 with no center diff will cause binding and stress on the drive train when turning. Use your own judgement, just don't come complainin to TW when you blow a diff or CV autocrossing your truck in 4 wheel drive. Rant over. :)

Yeah, if you are on snow, ice or even wet pavement, you are probably ok. My responses were to JaRobTaco saying there is no binding on dry pavement. Explicitly "That is the sole purpose of the open diff, so you can turn with no damage. The surface makes no difference."

You are binding in 4wd on dry pavement.

You are also OK, other than some minor tire damage and VERY minor accelerated wear to mechanical systems. This is one of the silliest threads on TW, comes up every so often. Truly comical to read all the little hand wringers that think their truck is going to explode because they ran a few miles on dry pavement w/ the 4wd system engaged - best not to risk it!

FWIW , crank the wheel hard on snow and you'll get binding too
