I agree with what was said about stay active, walk, bike, etc. Very important.

One other thing is to pace yourself. Meaning be easy on yourself, because we don't heal as fast or heal at all sometimes. For instance, I still ride dirt bikes but I don't do or try stupid things that I would when I was 20. I still ski but I am not doing moguls any more. I don't run 10k's any longer because of the beating it puts on my joints, I walk instead.

They did not tell us when we were young that all the stuff you did and all the stuff you ate would come back to haunt you after 55. For instance all the abuse you put upon yourself (the football injuries, motocycle falls, running, etc.) will come back to haunt you. As well as all the bad fatty food, smoking, bad habits will also come back to haunt you also. Nothing is free and there is a price for everything.

So,..YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Beware and be kind to yourself and those around you.

And remember,..Old Age and Treachery Trumps Youth and Skill.

    MQQSE: OOPS! Missed it.
You got it! The ship I was on, the USS Simon Lake, was just off the Firth of Clyde in Holy Loch. I crossed the Firth many times in a 50' liberty launch, LCM, LCMP, or a box-L. The LCM was used to bring cargo back to the ship, and the LCMP or box-L were used to transport the blue and gold boomer crews back and forth from the subs to the other side of the Firth, where they would then be taken to the airport and be flown back to the US.
I would love to be able to make another LCM run across there again, especially in heavy seas!
Gotta laugh! What you saw, I saw every day. If you never saw one it would be impressive.
Scary when you think about the destruction that could be unleashed by just one of them!
It's possible, unless you saw the flag, that you saw a British SSNFBM. They had a sub base that wasn't too far from us, and their subs also went out to the North Atlantic through the Firth of Clyde. There was another base on the Firth that I never saw. I believe it was ROSSAY, or something like that. I think it was for ships.

I smile a lot...when I hear my son and daughter admit life and raising a family is tough.. when I hear some smartass young'in thinks he knows it all..when I realize I have made it easier for someone else due to my years of experience...when I "don't sweat it" cause I have been through it before..when I realize how good I've got it, good health, bills paid, friends... when I realize that before too long I can look forward to retirement. Smile a lot brother!

Hanging over this Prius for 6 hours put a big hurt on me today.
Lots of diagnostics sent be into the belly of the beast.
Abs actuator and pump buried behind the Hybrid controller and Brake Master Cyl..
Ended up needing assembly so a total of parts, labor and diagnostics to the tune of $2,700 bucks.
People don't realize the complex diagnostics involved. Everyone thinks it takes 5 min. You can't even see what your working on anymore.
Everyone wants the fancy shit until they have to pay for it.

Thanks Carl. Yeah she was a British sub. It was an awesome site. IIRC that was July 2000, boys were 10 & 13. We all got a kick out of it. And Scotland was an interesting and beautiful place to experience. Love the people. Thanks for stirring that memory back to the surface. :)

Should warm up a little this weekend. Course I'm working.
Had major leg cramps at 3am. Had to jump in the tub. Small price to pay to be able to walk.
Dash work is a chore now. I can't put my arms behind my back or my leg behind my ear like I use to.
    Time for some coffee.

The pain of bending over and kneeling was a major factor into retiring when I did. The technology they are putting into a fork lift is crazy. The clock on the dash will reset with daylight savings time if you turn the option on[IMG]...that is just one of the "operator friendly" options they are putting on them. It seems instead of training the operator to use the equipment properly they are trying to idiot proof the equipment which makes the techs job harder[IMG] Take care of the back Mike.

    Morning all:
    Snowing here!
Man, you "OLD GUYS" sure have problems. Heck, I can still bend over and touch my toes, it may take a while to straighten back up though!

Hear you Capt. on the old mechanics that know their stuff. We still have one around here that was/is a very good mechanic. I'm talking one of the best.
He's semi retired, but still works on selective cars. Last time I stopped there, he was working on a "NICKEY" NOVA clone with a BB in it.
(I think the K was backwards on those)

x4 on the back. Would love to be as flexible as a young child... just to alleviate some of the pain caused by moving :(

I hear ya on the "idiot proofing" of vehicles today. That's like some of the new "gadgets" on cars today - like the park assist or the sensors that stop your car when you get too close. What about paying attention to what's going on, on the road in front of you and learning to park on your own

Good morning guys and gal(s). I have a dumb question. This is the only forum in which I have had problems posting a picture. Every time I post a pic, it comes out as a small thumbnail picture. I've tried uploading a JPEG file directly from my computer (it won't accept it) and I've tried putting pictures on Photobucket and uploading from the URL. In the latter case, It keeps telling me the file size is too big, so I go back into Photobucket and resize the picture. Then, when I post it here it comes out as a tiny little thumbnail. So.....what am I doing wrong? Everybody else seems to be able to post full size pictures. Is it magic?:homer:

Take care of the back Mike. stretching has taken the pain out of my back and legs. I have arthritis in the lower lumbar region.

I read where Toyota will be selling a hydrogen powered car next year. The closest refueling station to me is in Columbia South Carolina. The rest of the refueling stations are in California. I would imagine that sales will not be good at all. Also it is another set of diagnostic problems to overcome.

I am really impressed with the charging network that Tesla is building across the USA. I would not mind owning one. The biggest downside is the car is almost totally key code controlled similar to Microsoft. Example: The batteries are all the same, to open up the larger storage you need to have Tesla download the keycode to open up the battery capacity. At least that is how I understand the process.

Don't worry Doc.; I haven't got past the thumbnails either.

On the old motors; Quite awhile back, there was an old timer that owned a machine shop/auto parts store, that could still make babbitt bearings. He always seemed to have a few motors there to make bearings for from different parts of the country.
He's gone, and a lot of knowledge went with him...:(

Hi Tom, to try to shed some light on the batteries in the Tesla. On the newer AC(alternating current) systems the battery is the heart of the system and the master controller for the electrical system is the brains. The controller for the motor is the boss of the motor. Batteries have different amp hour ratings and depending on the equipment on the vehicle (lights, stereos, navs, etc.) as to what the controller gets set at so the battery discharge indicator(fuel gauge) reads the proper discharge rate. They also set what they call "Parasitic Current" through the controller. This has a default setting but if you were to add features to the electrical system, you would need to raise the parasitic current to allow the BDI to read properly. This can only be done by the dealer(proprietary software access) and their computer program. Of course they will have to charge you some money to do this. It will be fun to get someone to fix them.

    Ken:
From what I understand, from a Tesla owner, Tesla can access your car anytime and upload program changes. You do not have to be at a dealer for this service.

A fully charged battery can power the car around 300 miles depending on the habits of the driver. Right now Tesla is installing high output charging systems across the united states. The Tesla owner does have to book time at the station in advance for charging. A full charge takes close to 45 minutes. enough time for lunch at a service plaza on the interstate or toll road.

Power distribution networks have always been the bane of alternative fuels. Gasoline on the other hand already has the network in place. FWIW Gasoline packs more power and is safer than alternative fuels. It is just not sexy enough compared to electric and hydrogen or propane.

I hear you Tom, but with the fork lift software updates we had problems with wireless downloading to our computers. It was suggested downloading the software through a hard wired site. I hope Tesla can pull it off. 45 minutes charge is fast. Rapid charge systems do take there toll on batteries. Shortens there life span.
Nothing beats the sound of a gas engine accelerating.
