Plenty of reasons to go with the 2.7. All the ones listed are great. Also the 2.7 has a timing chain not a belt. Thing will last as long as your truck with no maintenance.

Seriously, one extra gear would help a lot at freeway speeds.

I chose it for price and reliability

I went from a 2012 2.4L 5spd to my 2013 4.0L Baja 6spd , and the mileage is only about 2 mpg less than the 4-banger, sometimes only 1 mpg on long trips. Same driving, same highways, same fuel. I "upgraded" because of the suspension, and greater power.

Okay not really, I almost went with a 2.7 but needed the extra HP to tow a little trailer and really the cost wasn't that different and the mileage wasn’t significant enough.

4 is plenty. It couldn't use any taller gearing at highway speeds or it would be downshifting constantly.

No replacing the timing belt either.

A couple of reasons the Toyota 4 banger is a proven engine that is bulletproof. It is a proven work horse. Another thing is if any maintenance is to be done it is super easy.

the bottom line for some is the 4 cyl gets better mpg, period. that's a huge savings to people who commute, need a truck and don't need the extra muscle :D. that extra horsepower in the v6 is not just +/- 2 or 3 when you floor it either :p.

If I was the lead engineer, I'd have made the current 3rd and 4th gears into 5th and 6th; then 1-5 would be so close the rpm's never drop more than 20% from gear to gear.

That way it would be a really snappy gearbox and could get the most from the torque that's there. Anyone who's driven one of the 3.0L Rangers with the 5 speed auto knows what I'm talking about.

Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.

I also live and work in the canyons, and constantly drive a fully loaded work truck up and down steep winding roads. In my opinion a 4.0 isn't necessary if a 2.7 is set up for low end torque.

I'm talking the 2.7 only. I know the 2.4 gets way better mpg than the v6. Also I'm only comparing the 2.7 to the v6 with the exact same models.

The 2.7 is looking good for the 2015 redesign with 190 HP and 200 ft lbs of torque. That's quite habit coming from a 4 banger if its true. The mpgs are expected to be around 25 to 30.
