Busted spider gear maybe worse

    Ok so I have 05 6 speed Tacoma with 33inch BFG mud terrains on it. I'm sure this has been asked before but my problem is a little different. I took off real hard pulling out of parking lot, got spinning wheel hop then pop couldn't move and has grinding noise trying taking off in any gear. 4wd won't move the truck either. I'm sure it's a spider gear but what worries me is just sitting there wether idling or truck off, with clutch engaged it's really hard to get it into any of the gears which makes me think it's a transmission problem too. Any opinions would be great thanks

    It's weird too. A few people tried to help me push it to the side a bit and in neutral , p brake disengaged, it stopped after being pushed a half a foot. Like it was in gear. We couldn't move it.

    x2 Remove the rear driveshaft and leave it in 2wd and see if it moves freely with the parking brake disengaged.

    Don't know for sure but the 2nd gen 6-speed trans. & clutch assembly is pretty weak, this is a known issue w/ some TSB's attached to it..

    LEER Shell with dome lights operated with 3 way switches, aux backup lights with relay and 3 position switch, modified wiring to compass/temp display and clock to include switch that disables dimming function (poor man's DRL solution), Scan Gauge 2
    It's known that the ring and pinion on the E locker rear end is weak. Wheel hop with sudden traction sounds like the right recipe for breaking one.

    If you put it in 4wd and try to move it, does the engine load up like it's going to stall? That's what I would expect with broken R+P, the rear is locked up from the shattered gears.

    Clutch is also known to be a problem, but doubt it would break from wheel hop.

    I would jack it up, remove rear driveshaft bolts at the rear diff and see if you can rotate the pinion yoke.

    Not sure about the shifting, maybe from drivetrain being bound up from running in 4wd trying to move the truck?

    It's got to be in the tranny/clutch. When I blew up my rear end, 4wd had no problem dragging the rear end and crunching the broken gear pieces.

    When you tried to drive it, did it try to move at all or just rev up like it was in neutral?

    I have to say I agree with Beavis and DoorDing on this one. Won't move in 2wd OR 4wd out of gear and it will not push or roll.

    Blown ring gear, 4X4 won't help if the rear diff won't turn with out removing the drive shaft.

    If you have the trans in neutral the input can be spinning but the output is not connected and will not spin.

    If OP blew up his clutch that should be apparent from engaging/ disengaging the clutch with the engine running. My bet is that it isn't the clutch since The truck will not roll in neutral.

    OP - put the rear axle on jack stands and remove the driveshaft, you need to narrow down whether the issue is in the trans/t case or rear axle. Anything we say without that info is just a guess.

    Also, probably not the spider gears. If it were spider gears you may have a scenario where the vehicle will not move while in gear, but will roll when pushed in neutral. Busted spider gears will allow the ring and pinion to spin but not transfer the power to the axle shafts.

    It will turn, it will just make some crunching noises as it does it. haha

    It is possible he didn't give it enough throttle to hear said crunching noises when he tried to move though.

    OP said that it's hard to get it into gear and that it grinds. Obviously a rear diff wouldn't cause this. It's something related to the transmission.

    So even in 4wd as soon as clutch lets off just Instant grinding noise no movement. I towed it already going to get it in to a shop wen I can, not that there's many good shops around here. I'm thinking it's maybe both clutch and rear end. I guess if it is I'll just beef everything up. Better clutch new gears. I just hope the transmission ain't screwed I lifted truck up and in neutral I can spin the tires it's weird. But there's also like a half foot of play then it catches something both back and forth.

    If hard acceleration with 33s blew the trans and/or rear end I'd be very disappointed in Toyota.
