    secret stuff.

    I'm thinking you had no mess because the filter had no anti-drain valve. Better filters use these so oil is ready to flow immediately when the truck is started. I noticed when changing oil on my old 88' Runner for the first time, the previous owner used the cheapest filters possible, and they would be empty when I went to spin them off. After switching to a better filter with the valve, the filter would always be full when removed.

    I wonder how well that EZ Drain works and what it cost. I spent $25 on a Fumoto and look forward to my next change to try it out. It has the nipple on it so I can connect a hose and run it right into an empty container.

    I also plan to run a hose from my oil filter resivoir to another bottle. Nice and clean! Though it would be nice if the filter was empty when I pulled it off and I will try the dipstick trick. We'll see...

    I've only opened up the air box for more air intake. No mods.
    Suggestions!

    I have a 96, 4X4, 3.7. I want to do the following:

    Replace the clutch fan with an electric - I plan not to run this off the thermostat but will be on while running.

    Add a dual-cooler radiator for tansmission and oil - mounted on my push-guard with it's own fan (I'm designing a box to hold it).

    I want to also re-route the oil filter and place this new filter in the same area as the dual-cooler.

    My question is: Is there a concern regarding transmission preasure and oil preasure by adding length to the flow of oils when I place them in front of the radiator?

    About to do my first oil change at 2,500 miles but have a couple questions

    1- Are any oil filters better than others? What's a good filter?

    2- My Maintenance Reqd Light hasn't come on yet, will the reset procdures reset the mileage count so that the light doesn't come on for another 4,500/5,000 miles?

    3.4L.....I had a type-o (3.7), but it's a 3.4L.

    1. Any filter brand but the base FRAM model will serve you well. The Toyota OEM ones are a good filter and can be had for $4 or less if you buy like 10 or so online. Plus the OEM filter will save you any heartache if you run into warranty issues.

    2. Yes, the reset procedures will reset the light to come on 4500/5000 from the mileage you reset it last at.

    Wix/Napa Gold and Toyota filters are what you should get if you're looking to spend around $6.

    If you want to spend a bit more, go with a Mobil1 filter.

    Right now theres a Mobil filter on my truck, but whenever I change my oil sometime next week I'll be using a Napa Gold.

    I had thought I had read something about re-setting something after an oil change. So there will be an engine light of some sort that will come on at what milage? I have an 09 with a V6.

    Maint light, or whatever it is, comes on every 4500 miles when its reset. To restet the light, or oil reminder:
    Push and hold the ODO reset/select button
    insert key and turn key to "ON" but dont start the trcuk (Keeping the button pushed)

    You will see -------- In the ODO display, and the dashes will disapear one by one, until the ODO blinks "00000",

    then let go of the button, and the system is reset. Do this after every oil change. :)

    Just did my first oil change and it wasn't as clean as I had hoped. It was far better than other trucks I've owned but I still have to adapt some things.

    Actually, it was messy because I use a standard oil pan and the oil came out so fast it splashed all over the place (I did it when the oil was hot). Then I couldn't get the filter off that the dealer put on. Well, it was also still hot and hard to touch. Finally, I didn't have the right size hose to connect to the filter drain pan.

    SOOOOO.......

    I installed my Fumoto drain plug with the hose attachment. Next oil change, I'll drain right into an empty bottle (laundry detergent bottle). I also need to get the right size hose to fit the filter housing. No mess and easy peezy!


    QUESTION:
    Does anyone leave a rubber hose attached to the filter drain pan drain plug? It gets hot and I would be worried about it melting the hose.

    For those of you that do not have one, you need to get one of these:

    These things are worth their weight in gold. You open two plugs, and the oil drains out of whatever you're draining and flows inside the container. Then you just plug it up and throw it back on the shelf in the garage. When it gets full, just take it down to your local auto parts store and dump it in their recycle tank.

    Much better than saving empty containers, etc. Speeds the process as well.

    I have one and love it, but make sure you know the capacity. Mine will handle a single oil change just fine, but it fills up before the second oil change is drained into it, so it's really no good for multi-changes for me.

    I empty it into a 5-gallon paint bucket I keep at the house after each use. It's still a great purchase, though.

    Mine's 16 quarts. It's usually good for two oil changes, and I can't think of a time I've gone two oil changes without a trip to an autoparts store.
