You don't have to "buy it." It is a matter of public record that the Fed assisted Toyota during the financial crisis. Read one account here and many others with a simple internet search.

    http://jalopnik.com/5704575/ford-bmw-toyota-took-secret-government-money

I'm not saying that there aren't good reasons to buy a Toyota. I have two of them now, and have previously owned five more. My son works for a Toyota dealer. Everyone in our family owns Toyotas and Lexus.

All I'm trying to point out is the fanboy-esque foolishness in implying that Toyota is somehow a better company because they didn't take government money, because it just isn't true. They did borrow money from the Fed and a government-run institution in Japan.

In their market sector, Toyota still makes better vehicles than GM, regardless of where their day-to-day financing comes from.

I have no idea about this fanboying you speak of :anonymous:

Toyota probably paid back those loans quickly though...

Yea and the Feds took an $11 BILLION loss on the GM bailout. Toyota's money wasn't bailout bs and you can bet Toyota is paying every cent back.

It is funny how people pick and choose who to be angry with when it come to the bailout. ALL those fuckers did a poor job running their company and handling their money and WE gave them the $$$ to stay afloat.

Yes, we choose the things that seem wrong to us, like borrowing money and not repaying it. This, by the way, is NOT how the government lost $10+ billion dollars on GM. The government bought stock in the newly-restructured GM and sold it at a loss. The loans were repaid in full.

I can't begin to see the complete picture of how the economy went wrong, and the fact that people who have spent their entire lives studying macro-economics (and won Nobel prizes for their work) cannot agree on how to fix it and prevent future occurrence tells me that trying to understand all of it at age 51 is not an effective use of my time. It all seems to begin with shady banking (mostly mortgage lending) practices, leading to a credit crisis, leading to corporate inability to borrow operating capital, and so on, and so on, and we are left with the bill.

Determining the cost of non-intervention is important aspect of understanding whether all of the government intervention was necessary or beneficial. I have read figures projecting 21% unemployment with GM and Chrysler out of business. The trickle-down effects to parts suppliers, etc., are enormous. What's done is done, and I sincerely hope that, as a nation, we are in better shape now than we would have been without government intervention.

Unemployment is higher than reported due to people not even looking any more, they gave up. Some analysts figure the real numbers anywhere from 15-20 percent. That is one in five people out of work, to some it doesn't seem like much but when you are out of work it sucks. College kids are coming out to no prospects, high school kids can't get a part time first job cause out of work adults have to try and make ends meet with that minimum wage job. Everthing is relative, if you are working things aren't that bad, if you or you know someone that has been out of work for years the economy sucks and no one seems to care

I also believe that the official unemployment numbers are lower than reality. I see quite a few people taking part-time work for under-the-table wages, just to get by. No taxes, no benefits, etc., don't help them in the long run, but people have to meet their immediate (and their families') basic needs. I don't see a short-term solution. Living-wage manufacturing jobs have been outsourced to other countries and/or replaced altogether by automation. The very nature of life in America has changed profoundly in the short span of my own adult life. People will adapt, eventually.

Personally, I make a conscious effort to shop at local stores owned by local people, and to hire local skilled tradespeople when I need professional help. Too often, though, the big-box-faceless-corporation-linked-directly-to-China stores are the only source of goods. It hurts all of us.

I am, thanks! I spent a lot of the day yesterday stripping down the old truck. Even stripped down, it's still a sharp looking truck (always been a sucker for the Tacoma styling). It's a sad and happy day at the same time. It's sad to see the Tacoma go but obviously getting a new truck is exciting. Now I just need to get all my stuff sold so I can get a cap on the new truck!

No, it's used. The truck has 14k miles on it. New full size prices are outrageous! This one has 14k miles and it was listed $12k under the original sticker price.

Hell, Pugga, new MIDSIZE prices are ridiculous too. I was looking at a new Tacoma before I bought my '10, but $30k was just too much. Bought the '10 with 44K on it for $9k less than a new one. Couple of miles and some scratches was more than worth the savings. Congrats again on the new Turd. Whoops, I mean Truck. :D
