Got Blowout last night, Left Rear. HUGE hole, center tread. Look what they found in the tire when they replaced it...

Apparently, I ran over a .45ACP 1911 pistol magazine that had at least one round in it. Round went off, blew the mutilated mag into the tire!

I've been a firearms instructor & RSO for decades, and I've NEVER heard of this kind of thing happening.

    Woof!

Pretty incredible. In order for that to happen, the mag lip has to be deformed at just the right angle to hit the primer at the right speed.

    Yep.

    That's a 15 minutes of fame, I really wouldn't care to have.

I guess. Modern smokeless powder rounds are about as impact-resistant as you can get... you could throw one against a wall and the odds of it detonating are way up there.

Since I was driving in a straight line (not turning) when it blew, I have to assume that the front tire ran over it without incident, but perhaps it positioned (or deformed) it just right for the rear tire impact to ignite the primer.

In any case, it's the first time I've ever heard of this happening. Definitely, WTF-worthy.

That deformation at the bottom of the mag doesn't look indicative of being caused by a round. My guess is you ran over an empty mag with the front tire, caused it to get kicked up/tumble across the ground just as the rear tire hit it. Deformation occurred as it punctured the rear tire. Still a WTF but that's my guess.

Perhaps, but the powder burn marks on the tire lead me to believe a round went off. I have the mag in front of me; the edges at the base are mushroomed out. It is possible, but I don't think what you describe would have done that.

 Definitely a WTF! I'm always amazed when I go to tire shops and they usually have a jar of some type with the crazy things found in tires. Can't say I've ever seen a magazine in the jar though!

Got turned down from a carwash because it was "unsafe" due to my bumper. I even had the courtesy to go to a self-service wash to get all the mud and debris off the truck and undercarriage. The gal definitely got a dirty enough look she probably needed to stroll the carwash.
