Tailgate Locks

Thinkin I'll just stay with my lowly 5200 and it's super annoying little extra key that you can't tell is even there. I still like the bottom half of the indention in the tailgate being filled in too.

Good stuff Adio, interested to see how long it takes to install. I like the idea of the electronic lock, but with the mechanical backup in case your batt dies. I had a solonoid on a beetle trunk once and it stopped working, that was a PITA to figure out how to open

Got my

$100 PL5400 Black Manual Tailgate Lock with Bolt Codeable Technology for Toyota Tacoma

PL5400 delivered today. Took me 20 mins to install. Easy install and coding. Only issue is that the pull handle is pretty flimsy and thin. Its not as thick and rounded off at the end so it can hurt a bit after holding the gate with just the handle. NOt sure how long it will last after a few years of tough repeated use. We'll see how long it lasts.

 

This was also a concern I had, plus the tiny 2 finger width of it. My old 5200 uses the oem handle. Still wondering if the 5200 could be modded to accept the bolt tumbler to use the toyota key with it. Can't really tell from the pic of the back of the 8540 above.

 

According to Pop-n-lock the barrel sizes are too dissimilar.

 

If your afraid of thin handles then its time to get the ezedown . Gotcha ya another mod, will it ever stop lol

 

I know, I called them....but it could be modded perhaps. That was what I was wondering aloud in my post.

yeah donn't think this can be modded to fit other older handles. You have to actually swap the driver side latch rod end for end on the new 5400. The back plate on the new handle is totally different and the gasket only mounts to 3 spots instead of 5. Not a perfect fit.

dang that ezedown is awesome. Might have to just pick it up. Man, might even have to sell my other cars to just pay for all these mods...

So as promise I finally got to install the

$210 PL8540 Pop & Lock – Power Tailgate Smart Lock Combo with Bolt Technology for Toyota Tacoma, Fits 2005 to 2015 Models (OEM Color Black, PL8540)

PL8540 combo kit. Took me about hour and a half. Took my time and made everything as if it were stock. Part that took the longest was routing wires from the tailgate, underneath the bed and through the cab. Everything else was pretty easy.

Before installing the kit I prepped it by adding grease on all moving parts.





Added this felt pad on the underside of the actuator plate. You'll see towards the end on why I added it. Got it from a local hardware store.




I'm not gonna go into the step by step installation, because everything is pretty much on the installation instruction. Pretty explanatory.

Here's the actuator and the handle installed.


The reason why added those felt pad is because of this. There's nothing supporting the plate besides those 2 bolts from the handle. It'll probably rattle or something and put pressure on those 2 bolts. That plate and the actuator actually has some weight to it. Used 6 pads on each side. Perfect enough.



One thing I did different than what the instruction didn't mention was re-use the clip that was use before flipping the latch rod. All I did was drill a hole and then reinsert the clip. Works as a guide for the rod. Also greased it up so it can move easily.
The black clip was originally from that premade hole top left.


Routing the wires. Pretty much followed the route with the tailgate camera loom. Installed the stock camera about a year ago.

Had a lot of slack so ended up just leaving it like this. Black plug is the pop and lock and that white plug is for the camera.


Routed along side the frame.



Through a rubber grommet.



Comes out under the carpet.



I didn't like tha fact that I had to use taps to tap into the wires. So I ended up just unplugging the plug and taking the pins off and just combining the pin and wire together and just putting it back on the pin slot. Works fine for me.


One thing that I didn't mention is that I used blue loctite on the 2 bolts for the handle. But your choice if you want to use it. Recommend greasing every moving parts cause it feels more force is needed to actually open the tailgate then with the stock handle.

I really want to do this 5400, but can't get over how small that handle is. I mean it looks like it works great, but what about the durability of continued use?

 

Very nice! Seems to work great and love the convenience of adding to the power locks. Once I decide on a bed cover, this may be the perfect addition.

 

I don't mind having that small of a handle on it. Plus I don't use the handle to support the tailgate when bringing it down. I grasp the the top of the tailgate whenever I close it back up or bring the tailgate down.

As for repeated use of it, time will tell. Honestly it is built solidly even though some people are saying its thin and what not.
