Tannins? From the driftwood? Depending on the individual piece, it might release tannins for a long time, some not so long.

Yes a combo of 10k and 6500 is a good balance. The plants will like the 6500. If your WPG is a little low, I would get both 6500 to help plant growth.

If you leave ur driftwood in boiling water for about 30mins-1 hour before putting it in ur aquarium, there should not be any tannins to dissolve in ur fish water. Just a tip! I did it with my medium driftwood, never had affect on my water.

My 60 gallon. So far I've bought a nice protein skimmer setup for up to 100G, filter for up to 75G, timer for lights, 80lbs live sand, roughly 80lbs of live rock, bought a nice LED light setup, have the Nitrate "packs" in the filter that absorb ammonia, and nitrates, etc...

These are older pics hence the salt lines from where I was filling the water and adding salt haha.

When first setup with fluorescent lighting.

    PHOTO_20130325_203449_zps70090fb3_195f1eeadf7926ffb9f1cb3796678936d5084c3d.jpg

New 48" LED lighting with blue and white. 72W worth of H.O. LED's. 18 -10000k daylight, and 6 - 460NM Actinic blue. It has an exhaust blower to keep light system cool. Going to add 2 - 21" with 18W each under the lip lighting systems for more coral lighting.

    All lights

Tank has now been running for 10 months now... Have 10 different fish including 3 clowns, 1 yellow tang, etc... also have 15-20 snails in different types, 15-20 hermit crab some blue leg, some red leg, 2 emerald crab, gold banded shrimp, bristle star, horseshoe crab, added different types of live rock, and whatever else came with my live rocks lol

Next on the list is my own RO/DI system so I can quit going to the fish store for water

for those having issues with tannins staining their water

try adding purigen in your filter media and you should have it cleared up pretty quick

My drifwood was way to big to boil. Soaked it in the tub for 2 days and did water changes every couple hours.

Im using 2 HOB aqueon 55 filters (overkill for a 55 but Im OCD) so can I open up the filter cartridges and add purigen to them? Would that work?

I'm in the process of switching my saltwater tank to a freshwater planted, and I was wondering if anybody here would know- Can I use my led reef light for freshwater plants? It a HO 3w LED fixture, with like 30 white 10000k leds and i think 8 actinic blues. I want to keep the plants really basic, java ferns, anubias, etc. Will the 10000k be enough or do I really need to go full spectrum?

Typically reef lights need to be much more powerful than FW lights. How big is your tank? The plants you want are low light, so around 1.5 wpg will be enough, especially if you don't want to dose CO2.

The actinic's won't help the plants. Also, the lumen for plant growth should be around 6700k.

Also, acclimate your plants to the new light by slowing uping the time and maybe start out by angling the lights away from the water column and slowly putting it in place over a week or two.

Thanks. It's a 55 gallon, 48" long, 20" deep. The light is not SUPER bright, it wouldn't be enough to sustain a reef on its own. It think it's like 96 watts. I forget the lumen output. But it is much MUCH brighter than the old T5s I used to have. I was more concerned that it's not really full spectrum. I might try it for a while, I can always sell it on craigslist.
Has anybody seen those fancy new full spectrum led lights that you can control the rgbs with a remote? Seems pretty cool. I wouldn't mind something like that.

You can also try using egg crate on the top of the tank for a week or so. It's like $8 at home depot and a light diffuser.

These were actually done with a 25mm lens extension and a 200mm zoom lens. I am just now saving up for a real macro lens. I shoot all manual as a result because it decouples the electronics from the lens and body when you add the extension.
