I got those numbers from actually looking at prices on cars.com. We have these discussions all the time. People want to brag about the Tacoma resale value (which is awesome, I agree) compared to the domestics, and then ignore the fact that it's often MUCH cheaper to get into an F150, Sierra/Silverado, Ram, etc. as a discount off the sticker price than it is a Tacoma (which is reflected in their resale value). But if I pay $30k for a $40k truck, what do I care if the truck is only worth 50% of its original sticker ($20k) in 4 years of whatever? It's still worth 67% of what I paid. People are constantly paying over $30k for a new Tacoma DCSB with a TRD package. All I'm saying is that it is entirely possible to get a comparably equipped F150 for that price.

EDIT: Just to illustrate my point, there are 1,600 F150 XLT, FX4, or Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 models advertised on cars.com for $35,000 or less right now. That's without haggling anymore. I'd say it's a fair statement that a new Tacoma DCSB 4x4 TRD is pretty comparable to any of those, and averages at least $30k purchase price.

No it is not cheaper to get into an F-150. It is 7 to 10 thousand more when comparable equipment is included. Even cars.com shows that as it prices the one you mentioned at 38,738 and that is a stripped down model.

I don't know what you want, man. I'm not talking sticker prices...I'm talking real world prices. Would you like me to post links?

2013 F150 XLT 4x4 w/ EcoBoost 3.5L. Backup cam, locking rear axle, power sliding rear window, heated mirrors, XM, etc. At WORST, it's comparably equipped to a TRD Off-Road. $34,999 (and it was in the highest priced category - I could have found a cheaper one).

    http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=newcc&csDlId=&csDgId=&listingId=131136296&listingRecNum=4&criteria=feedSegId%3D28705%26rpp%3D50%26trId%3D25777%26isDealerGrouping%3Dfalse%26sf2Nm%3Dlocation%26sf1Nm%3Dprice%26sf2Dir%3DASC%26stkTypId%3D28880%26PMmt%3D1-1-1%26rn%3D0%26zc%3D80218%26rd%3D100000%26crSrtFlds%3DstkTypId-feedSegId-mkId-mdId-pseudoPrice-bsId-drvTrnId-trId%26bsId%3D20218%26mdId%3D21095%26stkTyp%3DN%26mkId%3D20015%26prMn%3D0%26drvTrnId%3D27105%26sf1Dir%3DDESC%26prMx%3D35000&aff=national&listType=1

2014 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4. Normal packages. No leather seats or whatever. $34,952.

    http://www.cars.com/go/search/detai...f1Dir=DESC&prMx=35000&aff=national&listType=1

I'm not trying to start a war with you or say that an F150 is a better truck than a Tacoma. I'm also not saying it's cheaper in a $$ spent sense. I'm saying it's cheaper as a % of the sticker price. And that it's entirely possible to get a comparably equipped F150 to a Tacoma. Which is why the full-size market dwarfs the mid-size, IMO. There is more VALUE. The Tacoma is still a great truck, but you can get a lot more capability (in the way most trucks need it - towing, hauling, space) for the same amount. It will not match a Tacoma off-road, however.

    That is a 2013 F150. What about comparing 2014 to 2014?

I didn't see a real need to differentiate, since neither truck was significantly updated for 2014. But, in the sake of fairness and discussion...

    2013 Tacoma. $34,969.

    http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?tracktype=newcc&csDlId=&csDgId=&listingId=121525474&listingRecNum=1&criteria=feedSegId%3D28705%26rpp%3D50%26isDealerGrouping%3Dfalse%26sf2Nm%3Dlocation%26yrId%3D47272%26sf1Nm%3Dprice%26sf2Dir%3DASC%26stkTypId%3D28880%26PMmt%3D1-1-0%26rn%3D0%26zc%3D80218%26rd%3D100000%26crSrtFlds%3DstkTypId-feedSegId-mkId-mdId-pseudoPrice-yrId%26mdId%3D22250%26stkTyp%3DN%26mkId%3D20088%26prMn%3D0%26sf1Dir%3DDESC%26prMx%3D35000&aff=national&listType=1

    2014 F150 XLT. $34,125

    http://www.cars.com/go/search/detai...rnId=27105&sf1Dir=ASC&aff=national&listType=1

Again, I want to state I'm not trying to piss anyone off or say I think the Tacoma sucks, because I don't think that. I'm just making the argument that there are other options in the same price range with comparable equipment and more capability.

Yeah, if I was going to spend $35k on a truck, I would definitely consider the F150. Instead, I was looking to spend about $25k and that can't be done with a F150 4x4.

I am pretty darn happy with the Tacoma though, and feel like the reliability and resale will be better for Tacoma's vs. F150s in general, but that is just my opinion.

Although I do think the aluminum body is cool and eco boost seems cool too.

Well I see it, but I cannot explain it because every price quote I get is 3000 dollars, invoice, more than that. I would like to find someone selling Toyotas with that much of a discount under invoice.

I guess nationwide search turns this up. I get this

    http://www.cars.com/for-sale/search...rvTrnId-trId-yrId-prcId&pgId=2102&prcId=28573

which shows No F150s XLTs within 50 miles of my Zipcode under $35k and only 2 between $35 and $40k (both $39k)

And I find a huge selection of 4wd Tacoma Double cabs under $32k in nationwide, and 4wd double cabs as low as $26K.

So the price seems to be much lower for Tacomas

I've always been a ford fan and the more I look at the truck the more I like it. Probably going to look better in person too

We have fords at work and one F250 has 350K on it. Gets abused everyday. It has the V10.

You make a lot of good points. I totally admit that I am not a typical shopper. When I bought my Tacoma, it was the cheapest one in the nation that fit my wish list. I drove over 500 miles to get it. I always do nationwide searches, because I figure if I can get the deal to work, it's worth it to drive. I also use those prices to play off of my local dealers and hopefully save the trip. So I totally admit that within a certain zip code, you may not find any.

However, I would be willing to bet that those $26k 4WD Double Cabs are just SR5 models, which changes your comparison pretty quickly. But I won't argue a few bucks in price or SR5 cloth seats vs F150 cloth seats, buckets vs bench, etc. You get my point, which is that a F150 CAN BE found if you're willing to look around and/or travel possibly. I'd say it's also a general understanding that Ford/GM/Ram dealers will negotiate on price more than a Toyota dealer.

I also 100% agree that at $25k, your best bet is a Tacoma. When I bought mine, I paid $27k for a 6k mile DCSB Sport 4x4 for that same reason. I couldn't/wouldn't justify going up the extra $3k or so for an F150. So again, totally agree with you there.

And thanks for keeping the discussion civil.

If the new F150 was down sized to the size of a Tacoma or the 1st gen Tundra I would very much consider one. Ford is a good truck but just too big.

I agree. The F-150 4x4 weighs over 7000 pounds and that is just too much truck for my needs.

Yeah, searching like you did was eye opening to me about differences available outside the immediate area. I will have to remember to do that next time I am in the market.

I doubt I will drive that far for a vehicle though - that would be 8 hours each way and I would feel like I was unable to walk away if they tried to dick me on something at the dealer. Would be interesting to hear more about your experience buying that way though.

Adding to the price comparison discussion.

My brother just bought a new F-150 SuperCrew 4x4. It has the 5.0 V-8, XLT with all the options: E-locker in rear axle, heated power slide rear window, heated power mirrors, rear view camera, old man tailgate step, chrome package with 18" wheels, etc. and he paid $30,405. He was looking at buying a Sport package Tacoma double cab, and the best deal he could get locally was over $32K.
