I guess I'm in the outside looking in on this. You say Toyota should be changing their game to do what everyone else is doing but I think Toyota is doing just fine. I don't have a Tacoma, but I joined this forum to see what problems people have had with them and if solutions have been found for most of the issues.

Y'all gripe about the less than stellar gas mileage a lot (at least there is a lot of mention of it), but I'm coming from an '05 Wrangler Unlimited and I'm getting 9mpg in the city. The Taco's "terrible" 13-15 city mpg sounds great to me.

I'll still be keeping my eye out if another manufacture comes out with something great for a similarly priced Tacoma, but for $34k for a 4-door, 4wd truck with navigation, I'm not holding my breath.

It will have a 2.5L naturally aspirated 4cyl as the base engine. The diesel is a 2.8L 4cyl Duramax.

I think it's an intriguing truck. Don't really see myself going back to a midsize but if I did I would generally check one out. I wouldn't hold the last Canyon/Colorado being a piece of junk against this vehicle. They've been making much better vehicles since that 1st gen Canyon/Colorado came out a decade ago. Plus the 3.6L that most trucks will probably end up is a version of what they pretty much seem to use in everything, so it's not like it's an untested brand new engine. Definitely interested to see what kind of numbers the diesel puts out for power and fuel economy. Naturally not matter how good a competing truck will be, people will still make some kind of excuse for the Taco. Hopefully it does push Toyota to bring a much improved truck for the next generation. Toyota can only sell vehicles based on their past reputation for so long. Sure, they're still very reliable when it comes to engines, but quality isn't nearly what it used to be.

I also find it interesting that people are ripping GM truck reliability in general. Obviously Toyota's run a long long time but i see just as many very high mile Silverados too. Toyotas aren't the only vehicles that are capable of going hundreds of thousands of miles lol.

Um, care to expand on that? Where do you get the front and rear bearings are made by GM? They are not. My parts supplier shows the ECU for the Toyota Matrix is made by Delphi. Delphi is independently owned. Yes, they are a major supplier for GM, but they are not owned by GM.

The same can be said in the reverse. I have worked for GM, and in their small car markets I always see Mazda and Toyota on many parts under the hood. There are some allowances and exchanges for sure, but your claim on the specific parts you listed is not correct.

All this talk about GM, Ford, Dodge, Toyota, etc....

What it boils down for "me" is Toyota is the most reliable midsize truck on the market. Could it use a update? Sure... but not a drastic one.

I shit you not... when I was in the market for a truck this is why I bought the Tacoma.

Notice a trend???? Every fucking truck is a TOYOTA! Every third world country has a fucking machine gun mounted in the bed of the TOYOTA! There is a reason for that. They are pretty much indestructible. Yes, like any other mechanical thing out there things break. Things break less in a Toyota so that is what I will continue to buy.

OP... Have fun with the Chevy.

    +1 for you.

Couldn't have said it better myeslf.

I consider myself a Toyota guy. Im 29 and owned 2 4Runner's and 3 Tacoma's, but the more I research the new vehicles coming out, the more I couldn't justify buying a 2015 Tacoma if it is the exact same one they have out for 2014.

My truck cannot break 16mpg highway, it is loud with a cheap feel. Ill give it reliability, but sometimes being excited about getting into a vehicle can outweigh the common sense of buying boring a reliable.

Please don't take this as being argumentative but you have a "lifted" truck with extra weight and larger tires. Your mileage is going to be less. I regularly get 21-22 out of mine (not lifted but TRD OR with MT tires).

Cheap feel? Where? My truck is loaded with every option available and it is one of the nicer trucks that I've been in. Hell... even with the MT tires it's still relatively quite inside.

Does the light bar detract from the hypermiling? Be honest, we are all watching and judging you......BTW I can't get over 18 mpg, is there something wrong with my truck?

I believe the point the OP is trying to make is that a little competition is good for us, the customer. I'm not sure how many of you have been in a new Tundra but the number of options they have available that are unavailable in a Tacoma is insulting. I don't advocate a complete redesign, I personally think the new Toyota SUV/Truck design style is terrible, but let me list some options available on a Tundra you can't get on a Tacoma either at all or only on very specific packages.

    LED Daytime Running Lights
    Heated Mirrors
    Moonroof
    Passenger Auto Up/Down windows
    Power Sliding Rear Window
    Homelink
    Rear Disc Brakes
    Leather

Tell me that any of these items would require a redesign? They aren't for everyone but why aren't they available. They are available in the Tundra because you can buy a F-150 with every known automotive option and they have to compete. We need that.

Should have known. That has to detract at least .0000000001 or .0000000002 MPG right? Over 20 years that's like $.33, is it really worth it?

Don't disagree with that at all. The options you listed other than the heated mirrors I personally could do without. But yeah.

My truck is also fully loaded but I've been in a King Ranch F-250, a F-150 Platinum and a Sierra Denali, those are nice trucks, ours have waffle print cloth seats.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I'd rather have a simple, reliable truck rather than one with a bunch of extra junk to break.
