Saw Randy turning left onto Todds Lane; I was turning onto Power Plant. Flashed my lights to see of I could get his attention.

Aaron, I saw your truck in 4's parking lot before I left on a trip, I would've parked beside you but you were in the front and no spots around you.

Oh knowledgeable ones, please educate me and provide me some advice. I am looking at two winches

    1. Smittybilt XRC10 with synthetic line $550ish free ship
    Rated Line Pull: 10,000Lbs single-line
    Motor: 5.5 hp series wound
Gear Train: 3 Stage Planetary 218:1
    Brake: Automatic In-The-Drum
    Drum Size: Diameter 2.5" (63mm) Length 9" (228mm)
    Synthetic Rope: 94' 21/64" Diameter

    2. Engo EPF10000S $450ish free ship
    10000lb(4536kg)
    5.6hp/4.2kw,Series Wound
    3 Stage Planetary 265.2:1
    Automatic In-The-Drum
    Drum size Diameter2.5"(63.5mm) Length 8.8"
    94ft of 21/64" diameter(28m of 9.2mm*diameter)

From what I see the only significant difference is gear ratio. Using the Warn line for comparison of ratios the Engo is closest to the VR10000 (261:1) and the Smittybilt is closest to the Zeon 10S (216:1). The Zeon has a faster line speed than the VR10000.

If it were your money, is the extra $100 for the Smittybilt necessary? Before anyone suggests "buy this other brand", please know that I am working on a budget, have consider Warn, Comeup and they are not in the budget unless you want to give me a part time job or offset the cost differential :)

If you have specifc experience with either brand please share.

Would go Smittybuilt and then immediately tear it apart and regrease it as well as move the solenoid under the hood and waterproof it.

    Wut?

He hasn't done a gear swap. His front diff came with 4.56 gears. He still needs to get the rear done to 4.56

I have the Engo. Tore mine apart on the gear side to re-clock and the assembly and quality of material is exactly identical to comparable winches. Had more been spent, I don't believe any more quality would've been received until you get up into the $1200+ premium price range. There's copies of a field test article here
    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/index.php/recoveryandaccess/engo-winches-and-accessories.html

You won't go wrong with either choice though ;)
