Hey guys my kit lense just isn't cutting it anymore I am trying to figure out what lenses to get. I am trying to build myself a list of lenses so that I can start researching them. Funds are limited so I don't know where to start. I am trying to figure out what types of lenses are ideal for which types of pictures.
I know lenses are expensive so I am looking for best bang for my buck.

    I have a Canon Rebel T3i

    List I think I want:
    - Telephoto
    - 50 MM Prime
    - Macro
    - Fish Eye
    ...

I'm know this is a big list. I'm just trying understand how to capture lots of different types of shots. Obviously there is a lot of technique when it comes to capturing each type, that will come with time.

What lenses are recommended for these:
    - Scenery/Landscape (Mountains, across lakes)
    - Far shots (Birds, truck coming over a hill at a distance)
    - Night shots (Stars, )
    - Close ups (Animals, People, Trucks)
    - Action Shots (vehicles moving,)

So I creeped this thread hard to see what types of pictures I like/want to capture:

    Close one:

Can't help you there much, I shoot Nikon. I've seen a few pics with the Rokinon 8mm lens that look pretty impressive for a $300 lens.

What lenses are recommended for these:
    - Scenery/Landscape (Mountains, across lakes)
    Wide Angle - Tokina 11-16mm 2.8
    - Far shots (Birds, truck coming over a hill at a distance)
70-200 area. Canon 100-400? Another area the 2.8 will shine for low light and higher shutter speeds.

    - Night shots (Stars, )
Any lens really. Faster lenses will result in shorter exposures but less depth of field. Most of the time you will be using a smaller aperture anyway.
    - Close ups (Animals, People, Trucks)
Macro lens. Have no idea with canon.
    - Action Shots (vehicles moving,)
Fast lenses f/2.8 as they will have the faster focus motors in them for action. Also have the advantage of shooting in lower light.

Also if you plan on moving to full frame I'd recommend buying FF lenses so you don't have to buy all your lenses again for a new body.

    x2 on this question

    I am shooting a canon t3i.

    I currently have:
Kit Lens 18-55mm 3.5-6 IS II
50mm 1.8 really like one for pics of the kid with the blurry background
Just picked up a 28-135mm IS 3.5-5.6 for $125 from craigslist last night. I like the versatility so far, but haven't used it much yet. It does have a small scratch on the front lens, but doesn't seem to effect picture quality.

    Also looking at a 55-250mm IS 4-5.6
Is this what I would need to get those bird shots? I also work at an airport an would like to get some good photos of planes in the pattern(usually about a mile to two)
Got her down to $140, so seems like it might be worth a shot.
    http://tulsa.craigslist.org/pho/4252055954.html

Should I hold out for longer zoom for what I'm wanting to do?
Just seems like a good price that I could always break even on later...

Gonna need more than 250mm for a mile or two out. I have a 50mm 1.8 and really like it, awesome little lens and cheap too.

Maybe even the new Tamron 150-600. Sounds like they improved it some with this new one. No first hand experience with it though. Kind of a slow lens but I've seen some decent shots with them. they go for around $1000

Oh dang that's way more zoom than what I thought. I can take the golf cart out to the end and get pretty close to their approach, so it wouldn't necessarily be that far. It would probably be a half mile at the most now that I'm really looking at it. If I were to stay by the office it could easily be a mile out though.

Okay thank you for the help. I am not sure if I will ever make the step up to a FF. I will plan on buying FF lenses just in case I do.

    Peter,

the gear you have is fine to get plenty of great shots.

I have to ask are you using anything for post editing? LR? PS?

that'll be the next set for you IMO. All my shots have been on my 60D with the kit 18-135 pretty much. Haven't used my 50mm much yet. but that is all i have.

    editing them helps a lot.

also look into shooting techniques, more important for night shots really. Using HDR and Bulb mode well get you a lot of good dark shots.

I am pretty comfortable with photoshop. I design labels, logos, photograph our products and make promotional materials for my company.

I do however lack the skills in editing actual photographs. I edit ones of our products, but it is real basic. When I take those I have proper lighting, I set the white balance, and shoot away.

When I am out in the field I am still struggling with camera settings. Then when I go to edit them I don't really know what to look for yet. I keep watching youtube videos, but it just hasn't clicked yet.

You take really nice pictures as well so that is good to hear that I can still get better shots with my kit lense.

I know that my skill level isn't very high so I know it can definitely be improved.

Few pics from my last trip wheeling they are alright, but none of them have that POP! I am looking for.

For wheeling trips, i shoot apecture priority. usually around f8-f10. Keeping an eye on the shutter speed to keep it 1/60th or faster for hand held stuff.

White balance i never screw with while shooting. I do that in post as its one of the easiest things to fix.

    Shooting RAW is also important.

To get the pop you want, you'll need to learn PS a bit more. Sadly, i just got it so i can't REALLY tell you want to do.

But in LR i usually bump the Clarity, Vibrance, Saturation, and Sharpness to help things get more defined, clear, and that color pop. My "style" might be a bit more then others, but its what i like :p haha

You might look into getting LR really for photo editing..can't hurt to get ya started. Its very powerful at basic edits and easy to use plus helps keep stuff organized.

Interesting. I am almost always in plain manual mode. Maybe that is part of my struggle. Might be too many variables, for me still. I have never even tried Aperture Priority before.
