So this should work for my 2013 non entune radio? If so I will have to try when my truck gets out of the shop...

The walkthrough Jerez posted won't work on 2013's. There is nothing in the menus allowing customization of the startup image. Sorry guys.

6 pages of thread and nada. I updated the OP, but I'll restate it here: unless we have an experienced hacker or developer of the 2013 Tacoma head unit to clue us in, the feature is not available. I have tried flash drives, changing names of images, CD-R, CD-RW, etc, and its a no go.

The only thing pertaining to display images is the "artwork animations" or whatever option it is. I'll walk over to my truck right now to double-check just to be sure for a 3rd time. I'm not even joking, I always think I've missed a special feature on the non JBL HU, and always check once every couple weeks lol.

I got my Garmin setup with a custom startup image so I filled that void in a way:D

EDIT: For the non JBL, only image related things are "Animation" and "Display Captured Image". From what I understand "Animation" is for scrolling and stuff on screen, and display captured image is for iPod/MP3 player artwork.

I have a 2013 Tacoma DC LTD with the JBL HU with Nav. I tried this several times today and cannot see the option on the screen to "Customize Startup Image". I followed the instruction to the tee posted by 2012 Camry on the Toyota Entune site, still no luck. Reformatted USB drive, renamed files, cut & pasted folder names so there would be no mistake, NADA. Finally I remembered an old acronym from my days as a mechanic, RTFM, so I went to the Toyota Nav unit operators manual and noticed right away that there was no option for changing the screen in the manual.
    SO...
I think unless there is a hidden key function or "back door" it ain't happening on my rig. Bummer. Now I know what they meant by "Limited".

the OP updated the original post. but to save you the hassle, 2013 and older H/U you cannot change the startup/display off images.

only 2014 and new H/U can you set the images. you can transfer up to 3 images to store in the H/U for either the startup or display off. the default image cannot be deleted for either the startup/display off image.

It is really kind of stupid on Toyotas part, I mean I can view the photos by selecting "Pictures" in the Apps menu. I can even pause to view one pic or let them slideshow, but I can't make one my startup, shutdown or background pic? Pretty weak.

Isn't it the same HU? Speaking of annoying things, have any of you tried to disable the HORRIBLE seatbelt chime on your Tacoma? If I am going down the street or out hunting, that chime makes me want to pull my hair out!

it might be the same H/U but the 2014's have different firmware/software loaded which adds the startup/display off feature.

I wonder if toyota will ever get the hint and put out a software update to allow for this on pre-2014 models. Cause I would love to do this on my 2012.
