They also are launching an AR15 in .308 aka AR10, LR308... whatevs. Some are predicting a price point just north of a grand.

Yea i gotcha. Im all stocked up on 556, got a couple ARs in that caliber rusting away in the safe. It just hurts me to shoot 556. Im sure I shot over $1000 worth of ammo last year, but I know for sure I didnt shoot over 6000 rounds haha. 5.45x39 just gives me an excuse not to touch my 556 and 762 stash.

Break even at 3,889 rounds. After that, buying the upper is cheaper. Math is fun

Do you shoot that $700 upper as is? Most won't. Throw in another $500 for optic, $100 for BUIS, and another $100 for various accessories (muzzle device, grip panels, VFG/AFG, etc.) and you'd have to shoot quite a few years at 1k rounds per year to see a break even point in investment. By my math that's about 8 years figuring the average user shoots 1k rounds per year which is probably awfully high these days. If you think that there will be a surplus of 5.45 for 8 years I've got some swamp land in FL to show to you. That's not even including taking that same $1500 worth of hard parts investment and investing it for the same 8yr period and allowing interest/profits to compound. So it's not as cut and dry as one might think if you're only now considering getting in on that fad. If you just want an upper to shoot 5.45 and don't care about 'savings' then go for it. Knock yourself out. I prefer the Kalashnikov platform for that round but that's just me. It's your money and you're welcome to do whatever you like I just want to give the other side of the coin to those considering it for that specific reason.

What if you average 1000 rounds per month? It makes sense for me, but I shoot a lot more than the average bear. Plus, I can get 5.45 by the pallet and save on shipping. I like to keep a year supply in stock, and the russian spam cans stack nicely making storage easier than GI ammo cans, for me at least. I would still prefer an AR over a 47 because I like optics. Like you, I have spares that will not cost me anything to use, so that cost is nil, plus I have a couple spare lowers and LPK's....it's a no brainer for me.

EDIT: That palmetto 1911 sure looks like a Remington to me...I would not be surprised to find out it came out of the Phillipines...
