So my engine light has been on for a while. I had 2 diognastic tests done at advanced auto One employee told me it was the upstream o2 sensor and the other one told me it was either the sensor or my computer. I also had a tech tell me he reset the light but it came back on so it was probably the o2 sensor when I had some work done.

Today I bought a new o2 sensor and replaced it. When I turned my truck on the light was still on. My dad suggested that I unhook the battery and plug it back up. When I turned it back on the light was off. He then questioned if it was ever the sensors fault or if I just needed to reset the computer because when his o2 sensor went out on his Avalon his engine ran rough. My engine was fine but I did feel like I was getting worse gas mileage but I'm not sure if I was just overthinking it...so should I put the old sensor back on to see if all I needed was a reset or was the sensor bad?...I would really like to get some money back so I'm perfectly fine with it just needing a reset.

I've got a blown upstream o2 I've been running around on for a while (bad, yes I know) and I don't feel that the truck is more sluggish now. It feels the same, though I do believe my fuel mileage has gone way down. It doesn't need to be running rough for the sensor to be blown. The light was still on in the truck when you turned it back on because it hadn't been reset. Undoing the battery reset it. So unless the light pops back on in the future, you should be good.

My cel would come and go for about a year. The codes were inconsistent. I did the downstream o2 and it did not stop the on again off again light. When I did the upstream o2, that stopped it. You most probably needed a new sensor. You can always try the disconnect trick, but you'll probably see the light again within 75 miles traveled.

If you have a volt meter you can check to see if the o2 sensor is faulty. If your o2 sensors are fine and you still get the check engine light check to see if you have an exhaust leak anywhere. This little bit of air can throw your o2 sensors
